Stars on the Lido at the Venice Film
Festival

It’s that time again, stars arriving in water taxis on the famous Lido island for the opening
of the Venice Film Festival – this year kicked off with Mira Nair’s
excellent and thought-provoking thriller The Reluctant Fundamentalist — about
a soulful young Pakistani man torn between Wall Street ambitions and the call
of his homeland after 9/11, starring Riz Ahmed, Kate Hudson and Live Schreiber.
What else have I seen so far? Worth talking about is The Iceman, directed by
Ariel Vromen, is the gritty true story of Richard Kuklinski, the notorious
contract killer and family man and stars Michael Shannon, Winona Ryder, Ray
Liotta, Chris Evans and James Franco. The French film Superstar is a lot like
Woody Allen’s To Rome With Love, only with a darker turn as an examination of
today’s celebrity culture.

In spite of the rain stars continue to pour
in – including reclusive director Michael Cimino (being honored with a tribute
screening of Heaven’s Gate) who’s unfortunate tumble from the water taxi to the
dock was caught by hoardes of paparazzi – maybe he was just getting in the
spirit with one too many Bellinis on the ride over from Venice? Just part of
the fun as the festival starts to heat up – and excitement grows over this weekend’s highly anticipated
screenings of Paul Thomas Anderson’s The Master and Terence Malick’s To The
Wonder.

What upcoming films are you excited to see?
