“¡Es divertidísimo ser mala!”

“¡Es divertidísimo ser mala!”,
dice Rachel Weisz, riendo, al hablar de su papel en Oz El poderoso. En esta versión imaginaria sobre cuáles podrían haber sido los
orígenes del Mago de Oz –el amado personaje de Frank Baum–, el mago de quinta
Oscar Diggs (James Franco) crea haberse topado con la oportunidad de su vida
cuando es llevado de la polvosa Kansas a la colorida tierra de Oz. Es lo que
cree, hasta que conoce a tres brujas: Evanora (Weisz), su hermana Theodora
(Mila Kunis), y Glinda (Michelle Williams).

“Me encantó desatar la maldad de
Evanora”, dice Weisz. “Creo que fue divertidísimo. Fue como ser niña de nuevo,
liberar tu imaginación. Digo, en realidad no hay barreras. Es imposible ser
exagerada cuando lidias con una bruja que vuela y puede lanzar rayos y tiene un
ejército de changos alados –ríe–. No tenía un modelo que me indicara cuando ya
era demasiado. Así que seguí la corriente y es cosa que la audiencia decida si
fue demasiado… yo sólo hice lo que sentí que debía de hacer”.

Sobre su hermana-bruja Evanora,
dice: “Creo que Thedora está reprimiendo su maldad. Tiene muchísima maldad
guardada y [CUIDADO: ¡SPOILER!] cuando pierde la paciencia y lanza la bola de
fuego, es un buen ejemplo de lo que estoy hablando. Creo que no es tan buena
como aparente. No ha podido aceptar su propia maldad. Sabes, somos hermanas,
compartimos la misma carne y la misma sangre… aunque no sé si estamos hechas de
carne y de sangre. ¿Las brujas tienen sangre? No lo sé…”.

“Its so much fun being bad!” laughs Rachel Weisz, talking
about her role in Oz: The Great and Powerful. In this reimagining of what might
have been the origins of Frank Baum’s beloved character, the Wizard of Oz,
small time circus magician Oscar Diggs (James Franco) thinks he’s struck gold
when he’s literally hurled away from dusty Kansas and lands in the colorful
Land of Oz. That is, until he meets the 3 witches: Evanora (Weisz), her sister
Theodora (Mila Kunis), and Glinda (Michelle Williams). 

“I really enjoyed unleashing all Evanora’s badness,” says
Weisz. “I thought it was a very fun thing. It was like becoming a child again,
freeing your imagination. I mean, there are no boundaries really, it’s sort of
impossible to go too over the top when you’re talking about a flying witch who
can shoot lightning bolts and has an army of winged baboons. (laughs) I didn’t
really have a template for when it might be too much. So I just sort of went with it and it’s up to the audience to decide
if it was too big, I just did what I felt.”

About her sister-witch Evanora, she says, “I think Theodora
is actually just suppressing her evil, you know. She’s got a lot of evil in
her. And [SPOILER ALERT!] when she loses her temper and she throws that
fireball, it’s a very good example of what I’m talking about. I don’t think
she’s nearly as good as she makes out. She hasn’t come to terms yet with her
own badness. You know, we’re the same flesh and blood. Except I don’t know if
we are really made of flesh and blood. Do witches have blood? I don’t know …
