Ryan Gosling Directs His 1st Movie!

“If I’ve learned anything from the great film-makers I’ve worked with, says Ryan Gosling, “it’s that they when you’re a film-maker you have no place to hide. It’s the most exposing place you can be. As an actor you can hide behind your role or the fact that you didn’t direct it or write it […]

“If I’ve learned anything from the great film-makers I’ve
worked with, says Ryan Gosling, “it’s that they when you’re a film-maker you
have no place to hide.
It’s the most exposing place you can be. As an actor you
can hide behind your role or the fact that you didn’t direct it or write it or
cut it but when you’re the film-maker and especially if you’ve written it, the
film will say everything about you. So it’s probably best not to emulate anyone
and just to be yourself because it’s really the only thing that you know how to
be.”

Gosling is currently putting his acting career on hold, to
focus on the movie that he wrote and is direction, currently in pre-production.
The fantasy thriller, titled HOW TO CATCH A MONSTER, weaves ‘elements of
fantasy noir, and suspense into a modern day fairytale. Set against the surreal
dreamscape of a vanishing city, Billy, a single mother of two, is swept into a
macabre and dark fantasy underworld while her teenage son discovers a secret
road leading to an underwater town.’ Saoirse Ronan, Christina Hendricks and Eva
Mendes star.

“I guess I probably shouldn’t speak too much about it now because
I imagine it will be very different when it’s over than whatever I say right
now. I also don’t know anything about anything right now and when it’s over
I’ll have some experience to speak of, you know.” (laughing)

But, and an as-yet-unnamed
Terence Malick movie in post-production. As usual with Malick there is little
information available, other than it’s about two love triangles, obsession and
betrayal set against the music scene in Austin, Texas.

“Terry’s a whole other conversation and it was like the best
film school I ever could have gone to. He’s such a gracious man and he let me
shoot a lot on the film so I got a lot of experience with the camera on it and
he was over my shoulder kind of telling me how to shoot so that was incredible.
He’s a force of nature – he speaks 7 languages, he’s making 5 films right now,  one of which is about the creation of the
universe and he’s been shooting it for 15 years. He’s constantly pushing
himself outside of his comfort zone and, everybody around him and it’s incredible to watch. It seemed
like such a lonely place to be because the amount of belief that you have to
have in your vision, I imagine for most people some self-doubt would creep in.
But it’s an inspiration.”

Do you think Gosling will make a good director?
