Naomi Watts, de princesa a stripper.

“Me enamoré de esta mujer”, dice Naomi Watts sobre interpretar a la princesa Diana en la nueva cinta biográfica Diana. “Pero, ¿fue intimidante ponerme sus zapatos? Absolutamente. Es la mujer más famosa de nuestros tiempos, así que hay muchísima información, muchas imágenes, pietaje, fue un caso de tener que juntar todo y, obviamente, obsesionarme con ella. La fuente que más usé fue la entrevista con Martin Bashir, cuando salió en la televisión e hizo enojar a la monarquía por ser tan honesta sobre el final de su matrimonio y sus luchas personales. Llegué al punto de caminar con ese audio en mi iPod. A veces sólo la escuchaba, a veces sólo la veía con el volumen apagado, viéndola a ella, porque ahí me parece que no podría ser más cándida. Esa entrevista informó a mi interpretación de muchas maneras. Estudié su voz, su entonación. Incluso cambié el movimiento de mi rostro porque yo uso mucho el lado derecho, pero por la forma en que ella lleva el cabello, todo parece suceder en su lado izquierdo. Además de la forma en que echaba una mirada por abajo del fleco, con esos ojos penetrantes. Quise llegar a su esencia e interpretar mi propia versión de eso”.

¿Qué
sigue para la actriz, además de pasar tiempo en casa con su esposo Liev
Schreiber? Él, por cierto, tiene una nueva serie en Showtime, Ray Donovan. “De cierta forma, tengo dos
películas próximamente”, dice ella. “Ambas las filmamos en Nueva York y ambas
tienen un tono más ligero, lo cual necesito después de Lo imposible y de Diana.
No son comedias románticas ni nada, pero sí se inclinan más hacia lo cómico, lo
cual fue lindo porque he hecho un par de cosas muy pesadas, aunque eso siempre
me interesará. Uno de los personajes que interpreto en esas películas, es el de
una actriz en Birdman, de Alejandro
González Iñárritu, todo gira alrededor de una obra y está situada en un teatro.
Y en la otra interpreto a una stripper rusa –ríe–. ¡Para esa tuve que hacer una
investigación completamente diferente! Fui a un lugar muy raro y pude hablar
con un grupo de niñas rusas. Hay mucho video disponible en YouTube de niñas que
se promueven de ciertas formas. También tomé clases de baile de tubo y fueron
divertidas. Bailar en tubo es muy, muy difícil, por cierto. Requiere una
sorprendente cantidad de esfuerzo, mi cuello todavía me duele por ponerme de
cabeza. Pero es un personaje totalmente inventado, no estoy viviendo la verdad
de nadie, así que es divertido jugar con eso”.

“I fell in love with this woman,” says Naomi Watts about
playing Princess Diana in the new bio-pic DIANA. “But was it daunting to step
into her shoes? Absolutely. Because she was the most famous woman of our time, there’s
so much information, so many images, so much footage available, it was a case
of piece-mealing it all together, and of course then becoming obsessed with
it.  The source I used most of all is the
Martin Bashir interview, when she went on television and pissed off the
monarchy by talking so honestly about the end of her marriage and her personal
emotional struggles – to the point where I was walking around with my iPod just
listening to it. Sometimes just the audio, sometimes just with the sound down
and watching the image of her in that interview, because it seems she was the
most candid it was possible to be. That interview informed my performance in so
many ways – studying her voice, the pitch of it, changing the movement in my
face because everything happens on my right side of my face and she seemed to
move on her left side because of the way her hair was parted and the way she
would glance under that fringe of hers and her piercing eyes. I really just
wanted to get the essence of her and make it my own interpretation.”

What’s next for the actress, besides spending time at home
with her kids and husband Liev Schreiber – who by the way has a HOT new TV
show, RAY DONOVAN, on Showtime? “ I have two movies on the way,” she says. “Both
of those were shot in New York, both of those are of a lighter tone, which I needed after DIANA and THE IMPOSSIBLE. They are
not sort of Rom-Coms or anything, but they are more leaning towards the
comedic world, which was nice for me given that I have done some pretty intense
heavy stuff, although that will always interest me. So the characters I play in
those two films, one is that I play an actress in Alejandro Gonzalez Inarritu’s
BIRDMAN, it’s all centered around a play and it’s all set in the theater. And
then the other one, I play a Russian stripper. (laughing) Now that involved a
very different kind of research! I did go to this kind of weird place and speak
to a collective group of Russian girls, and there’s a lot of video footage
available of stuff on You Tube, girls wanting to promote themselves in certain
ways. And I had to some pole dancing lessons and they were kind of fun. Pole dancing is really, really hard by the way, it takes a surprising amount of strength, my
neck hurts still because that flipping of the head thing. But it’s a totally
invented character, I’m not living up to anybody’s truth so it’s kind of fun
to play with it.”
