George Clooney aconseja a Ben Affleck y presenta Gravity

“Estaba esperando que me preguntaran sobre el hecho de que Ben Affleck va a ser Batman, pero veo no”, bromeó George Clooney sobre la habitación atascada de la conferencia de prensa que dio en el Festival de Venecia luego de su nueva cinta, Gravity, la cual inauguró la muestra con una gala el miércoles por la noche. Tenía buenas razones para anticipar preguntas de broma, pues alguna vez un periodista le hizo un striptease aquí mismo en el 2009.

Durante una comida privada frente al Hotel Cipriano yo me pregunté, ¿qué habría respondido si le preguntaran sobre Affleck? Él me muestra esa sonrisa clásica Clooney, “De hecho le hablé a Ben en cuanto me enteré. Yo había estado viajando y no sabía del relajo que se armó cuando hicieron el anuncio. Le dije, ‘no le prestes atención a todo lo negativo. Solito se va a ir. Vuelve a ver mi Batman y haz exactamente lo opuesto a mí y te irá bien’”.

En la cinta, que es dirigida por Alfonso Cuarón con un guión que escribió con su hijo Jonás, Clooney tiene un papel menor al de Sandra Bullock. “En este, sólo había dos papeles, Sandy tiene el otro; así que esto es lo único que logré conseguir. Además de que yo no quería ser el que tenía que andar por ahí dando vueltas en ropa interior, no sentí que fuera lo correcto”. Ambos interpretan a astronautas norteamericanos que se quedan varados afuera de su nave orbitando la Tierra en una presentación realista de un catastrófico accidente causado por escombros espaciales.

De vuelta en la Tierra, la proyección comenzó con un par de problemas, pues el público tuvo que intercambiar sus lentes 3D, lo cual al final no importó pues la respuesta fue vocal y fuerte.

Aunque claro, en el espacio nadie te puede escuchar gritar.

«I was hoping they’d ask me about Ben Affleck playing Batman, but no,” joked George Clooney about the standing-room-only Venice Film Festival press conference for GRAVITY, which opened the festival with a gala premiere Wednesday night. He had good reason to anticipate silly or prank film festival questions – a male journalist once stripped off in front of the actor at his 2009 Venice press conference.

During a private lunch across the water at the Cipriani Hotel, I wondered -what would his answer have been to the Ben question? He smiles that classic Clooney smirk, “Well I actually called Ben when I heard. I had been traveling and wasn’t aware of all the backlash the announcement had gotten. So I told him, ‘Don’t pay any attention to all the negative shit. It will die down. Just look again at my Batman performance and do absolutely everything I didn’t do, and you should do just fine!’”

In the film, which is directed by Alfonso Cuaron from a script he wrote with his son Jonas, Clooney has a subordinate role to Sandra Bullock. «With this, there were only two parts, and Sandy had the other one; so this was the only one I could get away with. Plus I didn’t want to be the one spinning around in my underwear; it just didn’t feel right.» The two play American astronauts stranded outside of their spacecraft in high earth orbit, in a chilling and an ultra-realistic depiction of a catastrophic accident caused by flying debris.

Back on earth the screening got off to a rocky start when half the audience had to exchange faulty 3-D glasses, but it didn’t seem to matter in the end – the enthusiastic response to the film was loud and vocal.

Of course, in space no one can hear you scream.
