Benedict Cumberbatch habla de Wikileaks y Star Wars 7

“Recorrer la alfombra roja después de una
noche sin dormir y un vuelo largo es una experiencia muy intensa, pero estoy
emocionado”, dice Benedict Cumberbatch en el Toronto International Film
Festival. El actor británico lleva alocando al público en no menos de tres
alfombras por sus papeles en August:
Osage County con Merl Streep y Julia Robers; en la conmovedora 12 Years a Slave de Steve McQueen; y en
la altamente anticipada The Fifth State,
sobre la historia de Wikileaks. “Me siento apenado con mi fortuna. Estoy muy,
muy, muy contento”. Son tres papeles muy diferentes en tres cintas
completamente distintas. Pero es su impresionante encarnación del fundador de
WikiLeaks, Julian Assange, la que está generando rumores sobre el Oscar.
¿Assange ya vio el filme?

“Me contactó”, dice Cumberbatch. “Yo lo
busqué a través de algunos amigos mutuos y le dieron mi e-mail. Me dijo que él
prefería que no hiciéramos la película, pues está basada en dos recuentos
opuestos que le parecían venenosos y potencialmente perjudiciales a su
situación y a la organización. Me dijo, ‘te pido que como actor, no hagas esta
cinta’. Yo le contesté intentando justificar porqué creía importante hacerla y
contarle al mundo esta versión de los hechos, al igual que asegurarle que no
tendría un giro tan negativo como él se estaba imaginando. Yo le dije que
intentaría hacerla con toda la integridad posible para presentar algo que
hablara tridimensionalmente de la situación y de él. Básicamente eso fue todo
lo que hablamos”.

Sobre lo que sigue… ¿son ciertos los
rumores de que fue escogido para Star
Wars? Él se ríe. “Star Wars se
volvió una bola de nieve por el simple hecho de que trabajé con JJ y que me
separé amigablemente de Guillermo en Crimson
Peak supuestamente por otro trabajo… pero eso queda entre él y yo. Por
supuesto que me encantaría hacer Star
Wars y JJ ya sabía eso cuando anunciaron que él dirigiría. Le dije
bromeando que incluso me ofrecía a ser un light
saber, nada más para andar corriendo por ahí en el set. Sería genial
trabajar con él en lo que fuera. Han Solo fue un gran héroe para mí cuando era
chico. Pero no me han dado ningún papel. Ahí se termina el primer rumor. Lo que
sí me emociona es interpretar al explorador británico Percy Fawcett, quien
desapareció en el amazonas durante una expedición en 1925. The Lost City of Z es un guión brillante. Habla de los extremos en
la vida de este hombre, de la complejidad de los retos en su vida y lo difícil
que fue recuperarse luego de lo que vivió en la Primera Guerra Mundial. Y luego
volver a investigar esta obsesión que se volvió lo principal en su vida, el
encontrar esta ciudad perdida. Es extraordinario. Y ese nivel de búsqueda y
aventura que fue la marca de muchos héroes de la época es algo que me emociona
mucho y me llena de intriga”. Hace dos años, Brad Pitt iba a protagonizar este
proyecto y desde entonces ha estado en el limbo. La empresa de Pitt, Plan B,
está produciendo y tendrá a James Gray como director.

says Benedict Cumberbatch at the Toronto International Film Festival.
The British actor has been stirring up fan frenzy on no less than 3 red carpets
here for his roles in AUGUST: OSAGE COUNTY starring Meryl Streep and Julia
Roberts, Steve McQueen’s poignant 12 YEARS A SLAVE, and the highly anticipated
WikiLeaks story, THE FIFTH ESTATE. “It’s an embarrassment of riches to say the
least. I’m really, really, really, over the moon. Very, very happy.”

Three very different roles in three very different films,
but it’s his stunning performance as controversial WikiLeaks founder Julian
Assange that’s already generating Oscar buzz. Has Assange seen the film?

“He contacted me,” says Cumberbatch. “I had reached out to
him through mutual friends and my email was given to him. And, well, he said,
‘I prefer you not to do this film, it’s based on two antithetical accounts that
I find poisonous and potentially damaging to my situation and the organization.
I urge you as an actor not to do it, not to take part in this film.’  And I wrote back trying to justify why I thought it was
important to bring this story, this version of events to the world and how it wasn’t
as negative a spin as he feared it would be. And that I would try to do it with
the utmost integrity to portray something of the three dimensionality of the
situation as well as him. So that was basically the nature of our exchange.”

As for what’s ahead – are the rumors true he’s been cast in
STAR WARS? He laughs. “Star Wars has sort of snowballed a bit out of
the fact that I’ve worked with JJ and that I parted company with Guillermo very
amicably for our reasons on CRIMSON PEAK and it was not in lieu of doing
another job – and that’s between me and him. Of course, I’d love to do Star
Wars and JJ knew that when it was announced that he was directing it. I teased
him that I would even you know offer my services as a light saber, just to kind of run around on set. To work with him again on
anything would be a joy. And Hans
Solo was a huge hero of mine growing up. But no casting yet. So that’s rumor 1,
quashed. What I am excited about is playing British
explorer Percy Fawcett who disappeared in the Amazon during a 1925 expedition. THE LOST CITY OF Z is such a brilliant, brilliant, brilliant script. And just the extremes that
that man went to, the complexity of the challenges in his life and how difficult it was for him to recover from his experiences
in the First World War and then reinvestigate this obsession that became
paramount in his life, to discover this lost city. It’s extraordinary. It’s
really extraordinary. And that level of questing that was at the forefront of a
lot of great heroes at that time is something that really excites me and
intrigues me.”  Brad Pitt was originally attached to star in this project more than two
years ago, and it’s been in and out of development limbo since. Pitt’s Plan B
is producing with James Gray directing.
