Ahora, sentándose a platicar sobre The Fault in our Stars un par de semanas después, Shailene dice, «Tuve mucha suerte de haber hecho esta película antes de que sucediera todo eso porque hacerla me enseño que la vida es fugaz y tienes que despertarte cada día y adueñarte de él. Uno tiene que ser tan auténtico como pueda porque no tienes idea de cuántos minutos o respiros te quedan. Y al entrar al tour de prensa con esa mentalidad de que no me importara lo que la gente pensara de mí, pude enfocarme en tener una base sólida en la que me quiero a mí misma y me cuido, me soy fiel y realmente soy mi propia amiga. Cuando hicimos Los descendientes, Alexander Payne me dijo un día de la nada, «Tienes que confiar en el destino, Shai. Tienes que hacerlo». Y escuchar eso a los 18 años me llegó mucho, esas palabras se quedaron conmigo. Así vivo mi vida ahora. Soy quien soy y no es asunto mío lo que la gente piense de mí».

In early March, Divergent
star Shailene Woodley surprised fans by announcing that she is essentially
bi-sexual, saying, “I fall in love with human beings based on who they are, not
based on what they do or what sex they are.” Of course the press had a field
day, but the news isn’t that shocking these days, and for the most part the
reaction was supportive.

Now, sitting down a few weeks later to talk about her new
movie The Fault in Our Stars,
Shailene says, “I was so lucky to have done this movie before all that happened,
because this movie really taught me that life is so fleeting, and you really have
to wake up each morning and own your day, and be as authentic as you can
possibly be, because you just have zero idea of how many minutes or how many breaths
you are going to have left. And so then going into press that week with that
sort of mentality of not caring what other people think of me, I really just wanted
to make sure I had a strong core foundation of really loving myself and nourishing
myself, being true to myself and really being my own friend. When we were doing
The Descendants, Alexander Payne said
to me, randomly one day when we were driving somewhere, “You have always got to
trust fate Shai, trust fate.” And at eighteen years old hearing that, I really
took those words to heart. So that’s how I live my life now. So I am who I am
and it’s not my business what other people think of me.”
