A more self-centered actor would have postponed the surgery
or cancelled the publicity tour, but Hugh Jackman chose to defy vanity and show
up for his X-Men Days of Future Past press junket wearing a bandage on his
nose, just so he could spread the word. “Get checked often! Wear Sunscreen!”

Jackman, who returns as Wolverine in this incarnation of
X-Men, had undergone surgery the night before for the removal of a basal cell
carcinoma. “It is a skin cancer but it’s the most minor of them,” he said. “This
is my second one and hopefully, it’s my last. The doctor here said have you
ever been sunburnt and I was like what, ever? Growing up in Australia it was
almost like if you didn’t get sun burnt something was wrong. She said, you
know, just being sunburnt once in your life will put you at risk. But as a kid
you don’t think about health, you just want to have fun. And back then there
wasn’t the same awareness, there was more worry about getting into a pool
within 30 minutes of lunch than getting into the pool without sunscreen on. Thankfully
things have changed. But, yeah, please tell your readers to get check-ups and
also, don’t be like me as a kid, wear sunscreen.

Directed by Bryan Singer, X-Men Days of Future Past also
stars James McAvoy, Michael Fassbender, Jennifer Lawrence, Halle Berry, Anna
Paquin, Nicholas Hoult, Ellen Page,
and Peter Dinklage.
