Is Hollywood less judgmental these days? Nobody bats an eye
when Johnny Depp starts dating Amber Heard whose last relationship was with a
woman. And coming out as bi-sexual certainly hasn’t hurt the movie offers for
Shailene Woodley, or TV stars like Neil Patrick Harris, Zach Quinto, and Matt
Bomer. “Well hopefully people will continue to evolve,” says Ellen Page, most recently seen as Kitty Pryde in X-Men:Days of Future Past. “And
get rid of whatever issue they have with the LGBT community. As a gay person,
it’s hard for me to fathom why you would hate me because I’m gay or hate anyone
I know who’s gay or transgender so I hope that the more time goes on, the more
people realize that we’re just human beings living our lives and falling in
love. Why would you not want that for someone? I’m hoping that as time
continues people will grow and change and be more accepting so that more people
won’t have to die whether it’s in Russia or Uganda or in the United States where
people still get killed for being gay or transgender.”

So why did she wait so long to come out? “For awhile I was
afraid to, which had to do with my career and what you’re told, that you
basically can’t. But I was 20 and my life changed and also I was discovering
who I was and then when I was ready to do it which was recently, you know, I
just was done. I was done feeling like I couldn’t be myself. I was done feeling
worried about it and afraid. I was done having to be in relationships and keep
them hidden and I felt guilty for not being there for the LGBT community – where
there’s still total suffering and abuse and inequality. What’s been lifted from
me is, you know, I don’t even really have words for. I’m happy to talk about it
because I want things to get better for everyone in the LGBT community and for those
who understand love but perhaps not all the forms it can take will hopefully
grow to accept our love and who we are.”
