Even now at the height of stardom, with two movies coming
out – reprising his fan favorite role in 22 JUMP STREET and later in the year
the Cannes Film Festival critical buzz drama FOXCATCHER –  CHANNING TATUM is so damned real. And that’s
why he’s a great interview. It’s never an interview, it’s a conversation, and he never gives those rehearsed, canned answers
that sound like studio ‘media training.’ But of course sometimes that kind of
candor might bite a guy in the ass, such as his comment in the June GQ
cover-story interview, that,  “I probably drink too much. I’m probably a
high-functioning alcoholic I guess.”

What Tatum was referring, he says now, is that he likes to
relax with a drink – or two or three – while sculpting or working on various
artistic endeavors at home. “I’m hoping that people will not just take the pull
quote, that I’m an alcoholic,” he says, “because that’s not what I was like
intending or saying really and I don’t even think the writer was really
intending to make it sound like that. I think the GQ made that section bigger
to sell the story. I’m not mad at GQ either. What was intended with that was to
say in between movies that I’m a glutton and I do things in excess. Sometimes I
probably drink in excess and I probably eat confetti cupcakes in excess, I eat
bacon in excess, I love popcorn in excess and like excess. I eat cheeseburgers
and pizza and yes it’s really about getting fat, I put on like 30 pounds
between movies. It’s probably very unhealthy and that is what I meant. I think I
do it because so much of the time I am not allowed to have it.  I’m about to start training for MAGIC MIKE
and the monotony of chicken and broccoli, like your house smells like broccoli
for like months at a time. And there’s no fun, there’s no light, there’s no
like there’s no sugar and there’s no nothing. And I’ll really miss sugar. I
didn’t mean to sound glib in the comment but I’m going to be doing interviews
the rest of my life and I don’t want to edit myself.  But I do have to say that I don’t want to
make the subject of alcoholism seem light either because I have people very
close to me in my life that do struggle with that and it’s not a laughing
matter.”  (photos: Vera Anderson)
