Melissa McCarthy en la portada de Rolling Stone

«Cuando me dijeron que estaría en la portada de Rolling Stone lloré como bebé», dice con una risa Melissa McCarthy. «Estaba en Budapest trabajando con Paul (Feig en la cinta Spy) y mi manager, Christian, me estaba diciendo que tal vez tendría que ir a París. Le dije, ‘no sé cuándo porque estamos filmando 6 días a la semana, tenemos un itinerario muy loco, ¿no podemos hacer la entrevista por teléfono?’. Y él me dijo, ‘no creo que puedan fotografiar la portada por teléfono’. Él asumió que ya me habrían dicho, pero yo no sabía nada. Me quedé ahí sentada riendo sola. Es algo que nunca me había imaginado, digo, realmente no hay nada más cool que eso. Por Dios, ¡hay una canción al respecto! 

Una de los datos revelados en esa entrevista con Rolling Stone que quizá no sepan, es que ella comenzó su carrera vistiéndose de trasvesti para su rutina de stand-up como Miss Y. Usaba una peluca grande, enormes pestañas y mucho dorado. Desde entonces, como hoy, le tiene mucho cariño a sus personajes. Su más reciente como Tammy frente a Susan Sarandon. Y nunca se burla de ellos de una forma mala. «Honestamente creo que nunca me burlo de ellos», dice. «Creo que lo que me gusta mostrar es que la gente se mete en su propio camino. Especialmente con Tammy: ella es su propia peor enemiga. Creo que mostrar sus debilidades es diferente a burlarte de ellos. Todo el mundo tiene esas cualidades, todo el mundo tiene cosas que si no hicieran, tendrían una mejor relación o serían mejores en el trabajo. Todos hacemos algo que sabemos que no deberíamos hacer. Los veo con amor. Tal vez me acerco demasiado y quiero demasiado a mis personajes.

“I just cried like a baby when they told me I was going to be on the cover of Rolling Stone,” Melissa McCarthy laughs. “I was in Budapest working with Paul (Feig, on SPY) and my manager Christian was saying ‘Well you may have to go
to Paris,’ and I said, ‘I don’t know when I would do that, we are shooting six
days a week and it’s a pretty crazy schedule, and can’t do an interview over
the phone?’ I said, would that be okay? And he’s like, ‘Well I don’t think they
are going to shoot a cover over the phone.’ He thought somebody would have told
me, but nobody told me. So I sat there and cried and giggled. It’s nothing that I could have ever possibly dreamed of, I mean, it
doesn’t get a lot cooler than that. There’s a song about it for God’s sake.

One of the revelations in the Rolling Stone story that you might not know is that she began her
career by dressing up as a drag queen to do her stand up comedy as Miss Y,
wearing a big wig, big eyelashes, lots of gold lame. But then, like now, she has
fondness for her characters – the latest as the title character TAMMY opposite Susan Sarandon – and doesn’t make fun of them in a mean-spirited
way. “I don’t think I actually am ever making fun of them,” she says. “I think
I am showing that people get in their own way, especially for Tammy, she’s her own worst enemy. I
think showing their weaknesses is different from making fun of them. I think
everybody has those qualities, everybody has things that, if they wouldn’t do
that, they would have a better relationship, if they didn’t do this, she would
do better at work, we all do these things that we know we shouldn’t but we do
anyway. So I kind of looked at them lovingly. Maybe I am too close, I get too
fond of my characters.”
