——

Sundance 2015, opening night. The night is clear, the lines are long, the tickets hard sought. The film is a documentary – What Happened, Miss Simone? And if you haven’t heard of blues singer Nina Simone, you need to expand your music horizons – she was/is one of the greats.

It’s perfect I bump into Ava Du Vernay, because the film we’re about to see has a lot of parallels with her film Selma – although I don’t know that yet as I wait, cold, to get into the theater. But it turns out that Nina Simone was also a great civil rights activist whose life and career took a dramatic turn during and after her awakening to – and encounters with – Dr. Martin Luther King and his causes. The film is heart-wrenching and beautiful, and director Liz Garbus gets a standing ovation. When it ends, a piano appears onstage, and John Legend sits down to sing 3 of her songs.

They don’t usually choose documentaries as the opening night film here at Sundance. Last year it was Whiplash. But for so many reasons, this one seems exactly right for the current zeitgeist. It was a memorable night. And now the craziness begins.
