Mad Men: El fin de una era

Parecía
que estábamos anticipando este momento desde hace dos años, haciendo
predicciones, imaginando lo que sería, y sin embargo, temiéndolo. Y luego
llegó: el final de Mad Men frente a nosotros, sucediendo. Bueno, al menos así
fue para todos los afortunados que fuimos invitados, viéndolo una hora antes
que en la televisión.

La
locación: El histórico teatro antiguo en Ace Hotel, en el centro de Los
Ángeles. En el escenario, Joason Reitman dirige una curiosa pero maravillosa
lectura en vivo de un guión de la primera temporada, titulado “The Wheel”,
siendo leído por Colin Hanks como Don Draper, Ashley Greene como Joan, Kevin
Polack como Bertram Cooper y Fred Savage como Pete Campbell. Después llega al
escenario Matt Weiner, el creador del show, director del episodio de hoy, y
–para divulgarlo abiertamente– mi buen amigo. Su aparición provoca la primera
de tres ovaciones de pie mientras presenta al elenco.

“Estoy
muy agradecido –todos estamos muy agradecidos– de tener… llamaré a esto una
relación –incluso para los estándares de Jon esta es una relación–, con un
público como éste”, Weiner balbucea, y le asegura al público que no está
intoxicado, sino nervioso. “Ha sido un placer interpretar para ustedes y
trabajar en esto”.

Y luego
el telón sube. Y en caso de que no lo hayan viso aún, no encontrarán spoilers
aquí. Solamente diré que fue todo lo que esta espectadora esperaba y más.
Suspiro. Y luego otra ovación de pie, ahora más larga. Después de una ronda de
aplausos que parece interminable, subimos al after party a una terraza con
vista al centro de Los Ángeles. El final perfecto para la noche, tan perfecto
como podría ser despedirte de algo que amas. Y ahí está Matt, el sujeto del brindis de
Hollywood, rodeado de amigos y familia que lo felicitan, feliz pero aún un poco
nervioso, ansiosamente preguntando a cada persona que llega a abrazarlo y
felicitarlo: “¿Te gustó?”. .

Mad Men, the End of an Era: We say a reluctant goodbye to Matt Weiner’s brilliant series …

It seemed like we were anticipating this moment for the last
two years, making predictions, imagining what it would be, and yet dreading it.
And then it was here, the Mad Men finale,
in front of us, happening. Well, at least for those of us lucky enough to be
invited, seeing it an hour ahead of the West Coast television feed.

The setting: the historic vintage theater in downtown L.A.’s
Ace Hotel. On stage, Jason Reitman leads a curious but kind of wonderful live
reading of a first-season script called The Wheel, being read by the likes of
Colin Hanks as Don Draper, Ashley Greene as Joan, Kevin Pollack as Bertram
Cooper and Fred Savage as Pete Campbell. Next on stage comes Matt Weiner, the
show’s creator, director of tonight’s episode, and in full disclosure, my good
friend – his appearance resulting in the first of three standing ovations as he
introduces the actual cast. “I’m so grateful — we are all so grateful — to have
… I will call this a relationship — even by Jon’s standards, this is a
relationship, with an audience like this,” Weiner stammers, assuring the crowd
he’s not intoxicated, just nervous. “It has been our pleasure to perform for
you and to work on this.” 

And then the curtain comes up. And in case you haven’t seen
it yet you won’t find spoilers here – only to say it was everything this viewer
hoped for and more. Sigh. And then another, longer standing ovation. After the
seemingly endless applause it was upstairs to the rooftop after-party,
overlooking downtown Los Angeles – the perfect end to the perfect night, as
perfect as saying goodbye to something you love could possibly be. And then
here’s Matt, the toast of Hollywood, surrounded by congratulatory friends and
family, jubilant but still kind of nervous, eagerly asking each and every one
who comes up to hug and praise him, «Did you like it?” 

Yes Matt, we did.
