Colin Farrell has a way of speaking a whole lot of words and
yet somehow, sometimes, not really saying anything. It doesn’t matters, with his accent he could read
the telephone book and I’d still listen. But wait, do they still make telephone
books? I’ve known Colin since his bad boy days, hanging out with him in Dublin, drinking shots of Irish whiskey with his grandparents. But that was then. These days he’s busy being a good dad, working hard, just made headlines at the Cannes Film Festival for his role in The Lobster opposite Rachel Weisz and of course, back in Hollywood everyone’s buzzing about the highly anticipated second season premiere of True Detective.

For some reason I never thought I’d see Colin turn up in a TV series. “Yeah, yeah, no me neither,” he laughs. “And when I heard
they were making a second series of True Detective, I thought , ‘Oh, the first
season was so good, who is going to be foolish enough to step into those
shoes?’ And then I read the script and I was like ‘Oh, it’s so good.’ (laughs) It’s
just so strong and it became about okay, I don’t want to suffer the slings and arrows
of literally outrageous fortune and quietly say no to it because I’m afraid of
being judged or it not being as strong as the first year. I want to go where
the strong writing is. Just that. Just in and of itself because I loved the first
year. And then to do this I had to forget about the first year. I was just
compelled by what Nic Pizzolatto wrote on the page and I know that Nic is strong
enough and gifted enough to not do a second season just for the money. I know
he had things that he wanted to say and visions and ideas that were original to
him and that intrigued him enough to lock himself in an office from 9 O’clock
‘til 5 O’clock in the evening in Ojai 5 days a week and bang this script out. So,
yeah, it was that. It was just literally following the work. And mates have
said to me, ‘So what was the difference shooting television, as opposed to film?’
And with this, this is bigger than the last 3 films I’ve done. I mean, The
Lobster, Miss Julie,  and whatever was
before that, this was bigger. It was bigger budgetarily and it was a bigger
canvas and, you know, it was all the bells and whistles and just really compelling
stuff. And it was great that I got to be in Los Angeles for 6 months and shoot.
Nothing shoots here. I haven’t worked that long in Los Angeles since I did
S.W.A.T which was 2003 or ‘4, I mean, I did like 3 weeks on Saving Mr. Banks, and
I did 7 Psychopaths but a lot of that was out in the desert. But to be home
shooting in my own bed for 5-1/2 months and, you know, then doing the school
runs and stuff, figuring out how to get nannies sorted and all – it was mental
but it was great. It worked. I had a lot of help from sisters and my mother and
it was a really cool time. My mother and my two sisters, the stepfather,
brother-in-law and niece and my two children are all in Los Angeles so I have
so much family there. It’s really amazing because if I lived in Los Angeles and
all my family lived in Dublin, I’d be sad. I mean, people do it and you do it
and you get by, you know, but I’d be sad. But words, words on paper, that’s exclusively
why I did it.”

OK, so we get it. Words on paper is why he did it. True
Detective Season 2, also starring Vince Vaughn, Taylor Kitsch, Rachel
McAdams.  Don’t tell anybody but I’ll be
seeing a preview screening of the first 3 episodes tomorrow night, June 3rd.
