Where should the line be that Political Correctness doesn’t
need to cross?

Suffragette is an important film: tough and shocking, about
women finding their voice, and fighting for equality and the right to vote –
something that, because of their courage so many years ago, we can take for
granted today.  The film Suffragette, written
by Abi Morgan and directed by Sarah Gavron, tells the
story of the violent struggle of women in the UK for equal rights including the
right to vote. Carey Mulligan is Maud, a laundress whose eyes are opened to the
movement by her workmate. Meryl Streep appears as the formidable Emmeline
Pankhurst, rallying her troops from a London balcony. The full quote, intended
to rouse women to stand up against oppression, is «Know that women, once
convinced that they are doing what is right, that their rebellion is just,
will go on, no matter what the difficulties, no matter what the dangers,
so long as there is a woman alive to hold up the flag of rebellion. I
would rather be a rebel than a slave.»

So when Time Out London magazine wanted to put the London
Film Festival on the cover, it seemed a clever idea to photograph the stars (Mulligan,
Streep, Anne-Marie Duff and Romolo Garai) of such an important British film wearing
the quote proudly on their chests to honor those original bad-ass feminist suffragettes
and their fight for equality. But some women, especially women of color, were
horrified, as Ebony Magazine writes, “Seriously, is there anything more tone
deaf than casually putting “slave” on a shirt worn by a bunch of white women?”

Personally I think the T-shirts are provocative in the best possible way, meant to start a conversation. But is that thinking insensitive? What do you think?
