Unless you’ve been living under a rock you already know that for the second year in a row, zero black actors have been nominated in any of the four categories for this year’s Academy Awards – in spite of worthy candidates Will Smith (for his stunning performance in Concussion), Michael B. Jordan (Creed) and Idris Elba (Beasts of No Nation.)

And you probably also know that Spike Lee and Jada Pinkett Smith were the first celebrities first to announce they would boycott the Oscars. Jada’s facebook video post saying she and her husband would be skipping the awards inspired some heated backlash from Will’s Fresh Prince of Bel-Air co-star Janet Hubert who posted her own angry video statement, which includes, “Does your man not have a mouth of his own with which to speak?” and “Our boys are being shot left and right. People are hungry, peple are starving, people are trying to pay bills, and you talk about some mother****** actors and Oscars. And it just ain’t that deep.” But another facebook response gets even more personal, pointing out the politically incorrect elephant tusk displayed in Jada’s living room, visible behind her in her video protest.  (“Not enough black actors working in Hollywood? What about not enough elephants left in the world?)

When the nominations were announced, Chris Rock, this year’s Oscars ceremony host, immediately took to Twitter to call the Oscars the “White BET Awards” – BET being the name for Black Entertainment Television. But so far Rock reportedly has no intention of stepping down. In 2014 he wrote an essay for The Hollywood Reporter on the industry’s race problem, in which he said, “It’s a white industry, just as the NBA is a black industry. I’m not even saying it’s a bad thing. It just is.”

With weeks to go before the ceremony, passionate debate swells. Fast and Furious star Tyrese Gibson adds his opinion that Rock should skip trying to tackle the issue as a host, saying, “The statement that you make is, you step down. That’s what you do.”  While former Oscar-winner Whoopi Goldberg advises fans to boycott the movies they have issues with, not the Oscars. “Chris Rock is the host of the Academy Awards, and to boycott him seems just as bad as what everybody is saying. We have this conversation every year and it pisses me off!” She’s right. 20 years ago there was a protest over lack of diversity at the Oscars, with a lineup of actors just as white as this, with best picture nominees Braveheart, Apollo 13, Babe, The Postman and Sense and Sensibility. Adding his voice to the conversation, George Clooney points out that more African Americans were nominated a decade ago. “I think around 2004, certainly there were black nominees – like Don Cheadle, Morgan Freeman. And all of a sudden, you feel like we’re moving in the wrong direction.”

So, should Chris Rock bail on the Oscars? What are your thoughts?
