Días y noches en Venecia

Más sobre W.E. de Madonna. En la fiesta celebrada antes de la premiere, todas las miradas se dirigían a Andrea Riseborough (impresionante como Wallis Simpsson) y Abbie Cornish (su contraparte moderna, Wally Winthrop). Este filme hermosamente armado no merece todas las opiniones negativas que recibió de los críticos malévolos, que es obvio que se la traen contra la cantante multitalentosa convertida en cineasta.

“Una vez que eres famosa renuncias a la idea de que la gente te apreciará por lo que eres, o verá más allá de la superficie”, afirmó Madonna, refiriéndose tanto a su filme como a su experiencia personal. “Creo que a Wallis Simpson y a Eduardo VIII esto les frustró mucho, porque luego de que él abdicara, la pareja no tuvo una oportunidad real para defenderse. Así que espero haber podido defender a Wallis Simpson a través de mi filme”.
 
Mientras tanto, en Giudecca, a medio camino en la laguna entre Lido y Venecia, en el rinconcito favorito de George Clooney, el bar del Hotel Cipriani, Evan Rachel Wood sorprendió a la pequeña concurrencia al acompañar al cantante local para interpretar “Piece of My Heart”, “Proud Mary” y “What’s Going On”. Sonaba muy parecida a Janis Joplin. “Y sólo tiene 23 años, la odio”, bromeó Clooney.
 
De vuelta en el circuito de proyecciones, Sal de James Franco, sobre la vida de Sal Mineo, se siente como un filme estudiantil experimental. Es una decepción en muchos niveles, sobre todo viniendo de un tipo tan talentoso. Parece que no le gustó a la audiencia compuesta por miembros de la prensa, pero la proyección de media noche estaba abarrotada por un público joven, así que chance y el filme se vuelve de culto.
 
Shame, el drama del director británico Steve McQueen, está protagonizado por Michael Fassbender y Carey Mulligan, quienes entregan interpretaciones valientes, crudas y…. bastante desnudas. Otra revelación musical: Carey canta, y su voz es sensual y cautivante. ¿Hay algo que no pueda hacer esta chica? Bueno, a pesar de que inevitablemente el filme obtendrá una clasificación NC-17 o R, al día de hoy parece que Harvey Weinstein obtendrá los derechos de distribución.
 
Lo más divertido del día: el almuerzo con vista al Gran Canal y acompañada de Matt Damon, quien promueve Contagion. En este thriller impregnado de fobia contra los gérmenes tiene una cabellera generosa, pero hoy está rapado para el papel que interpreta en la película sci-fi de Neill Blomkamp, Elysium, que se encuentra en producción.
 
Eso es todo por ahora, pero como siempre hay más por venir.

More about Madonna’s W./ E. – At the pre-premiere cocktail party, all eyes were on Andrea Riseborough (stunning as Wallis Simpson) and Abbie Cornish (the modern day counterpart, Wally Winthrop). This beautifully mounted film does not deserve the trashing its received from mean-spirited critics who obviously are just gunning for the multi-talented singer-turned-filmmaker.

“I think once you become famous, you have to pretty much relinquish the idea that people are going to see you for who you are, or look beyond the surface of things,” she said, referring to her film as much as her own experience. “I think that was a source of great frustration for Wallis Simpson and for Edward VIII, because after he abdicated, they didn’t really have the opportunity to defend themselves. So hopefully, I have been able to do that for Wallis Simpson through my film.”

Meanwhile, on Giudecca, halfway across the lagoon between Lido and Venice, at George Clooney’s favorite hide-away, the Cipriani Hotel bar, Evan Rachel Wood surprised the small crowd by joining the local singer and belting out Piece of My Heart, Proud Mary and What’s Going On, and sounding a whole lot like Janis Joplin. “And she’s only 23. I hate her,”  joked Clooney.

Back on the screening circuit, James Franco’s Sal, about the life of Sal Mineo, feels like an experimental student film, very disappointing on so many levels from such a talented guy. The press audience didn’t seem to like it, but the midnight screening played to a sold-out crowd of young public ticket holders, so maybe it will find a cult following.

British filmmaker Steve McQueen’s drama Shame stars Michael Fassbender and Carey   Mulligan, both of whom give very brave, raw and by the way, full frontal, performances. And another musical revelation: Carey sings and it’s sultry and haunting. Is there anything that girl can’t do?  Anyway, in spite of the inevitable NC-17 or R rating, as of today looks like Harvey Weinstein might acquire for distribution.

Most fun of the day, lunch overlooking the Grand Canal with Matt Damon, here to promote Contagion. In that germaphobic thriller he’s got a full head of hair but today, he’s shaved clean for the role he’s shooting now in Neill Blomkamp’s sci fi Elysium.
