On set with American Idol

OK OK I admit it, American Idol is my guilty pleasure. So of course I jumped at the chance when an invitation came to attend last Tuesday’s taping at CBS.  To make the night even more fun, Adam Lambert (last year’s fabulously outrageous and talented runner-up) was on hand as the celebrity “mentor” lending advise to the 9 remaining contestants. Past mentors have included the likes of Usher, Alicia Keyes, Mariah Carey and Andrew Lloyd Weber, so even Adam was surprised to be chosen. “It was a big shock and an honor,” he grinned. “Obviously I’m just at the start of my career, so I may not have the history of an established recording artist, but I do know where they are right now. I was just here a year ago, and it’s fresh in my mind – so hopefully I brought them a sort of insight into the process. It’s tough, there’s a lot that goes on that the audience doesn’t see.”

Does he have any insight as to why the competition has been so guy-heavy the last few seasons? “The demographic is mostly women voters. It shouldn’t surprise you that women won’t vote as often for another woman as for the boy they think is cute!”

What about the night did surprise me? That stage is a lot smaller than it looks on TV. Even the worst of the singers sounds 100% better in person live than what you’re hearing at home. AND – Simon Cowell is a lot nicer than you might expect!
