OK so the long-dreaded actors’ strike didn’t happen – but the threat lingers over Hollywood like a big black cloud. Still recovering from last year’s paralyzing writers’ strike, production companies – especially television companies – are reticent to make commitments. But even without the strike, 2009 definitely doesn’t look like “business as usual” – with studios announcing huge layoffs and cutting back executive perks. Paramount even scrapped their traditional Christmas celebration with its extravagant backlot ice skating rink. OK, I get it, sure I’ll miss the fancy press junkets (like going to Athens for MAMMA MIA) but we all know belt-tightening is necessary. But Hollywood’s financial woes are bigger than a few executive perks. At the end of 2008 there were a lot of mega-budgeted movies crowding the release schedules, few of which actually have a chance of becoming box office hits. Maybe it’s time to rethink the whole damned business and start making smarter choices. Bigger isn’t always better. Look at TV: the best show on the air today, hands down, is MAD MEN. Produced by a small cable network, it launched with limited marketing and let the critics and audience decide. It’s a good model for those high-paid studio executives to study – not because of the three martini lunches it celebrates, but because it’s smart, grown up, and truly independent.
