Ganadores de Sundance

“Cada año el Festival de Cine Sundance pone bajo los reflectores a las nuevas tendencias y voces del cine independiente, y este año no es la excepción”, declaró el director del certamen, John Cooper, durante la ceremonia de premiación llevada a cabo el pasado sábado."

Continuó: “Aunque estas preseas reconocen aun más a aquellos que tuvieron un mayor impacto en nuestro público y jurado, el nivel de talento mostrado por todos en el festival fue bastante notable, y debemos de felicitar y agradecer a todos por compartir su trabajo con nosotros”.

Este año Sundance fue un evento de bajo perfil, tal vez debido a la tormenta de nieve durante el fin de semana de apertura. Aún así estuvo lleno de muchas películas buenas , entre las cuales no hubo una clara favorita.

De manera irónica, de entre los filmes que traían más buzz, sólo uno recibió un reconocimiento: The Surrogate se llevó el Premio del Público, el de Drama (Estados Unidos) y un Premio Especial del Jurado por su reparto. Los otros premios se distribuyeron de la siguiente manera:

• Gran Premio del Jurado, Documental (Estados Unidos): The House I Love In
• Gran Premio del Jurado, Drama (Estados Unidos): Beasts of the Southern Wild
• Premio del Público, Documental (Estados Unidos): The Invisible War/U.S.A.
• Premio del Jurado (Cine Mundial), Documental: The Law in These Parts / Israel
• Premio del Jurado (Cine Mundial), Drama: Violeta Went to Heaven / Chile, Argentina, Brasil, España
• Premio del Público (Cine Mundial), Documental: Searching for Sugarman / Suecia, Reino Unido
• Premio del Público (Cine Mundial), Drama: Valley of Saints / India, Estados Unidos

Los premios Mahindra Global Filmmaking Awards se presentaron antes, y reconocieron a directores independientes emergentes y provenientes de todo el mundo. Estos son los proyectos que se encuentran desarrollando: Etienne Kallos/ Vrystaat (Free State) de Sudáfrica; Ariel Kleiman/ Partisan, de Australia; Dominga Sotomayor/ Late to Die Young, de Chile; y Shonali Bose/ Margarita, with a Straw, de India.

“Every year the Sundance Film Festival brings to light exciting new directions and fresh voices in independent film, and this year is no different,” said festival director John Cooper at the festival’s awards ceremony Saturday evening.

“While these awards further distinguish those that have had the most impact on audiences and our jury, the level of talent showcased across the board at the Festival was really impressive, and all are to be congratulated and thanked for sharing their work with us.”

This year was a low-key Sundance, perhaps subdued by the blizzard opening week-end, still, filled with many good movies but no clear front-runner. Ironically, of the so-called “buzz” films, only one got award recognition: The Surrogate won the Audience Award, U.S. Dramatic and a Special Jury Prize for ensemble cast. Other wards include:

• Grand Jury Prize, U.S. Documentary: The House I Live In.  
• Grand Jury Prize, U.S. Dramatic: Beasts of the Southern Wild.  
• Audience Award,  U.S. Documentary: THe Invisible War.
• World Cinema Jury Prize, Documentary: The Law in These Parts/ Israel.
• World Cinema Jury Prize, Dramatic: Violeta Went To Heaven/ Chile, Argentina, Brazil, Spain.
• World Cinema Audience Award, Documentary: Searching For Sugarman/ Sweden, United Kingdom.  
• World Cinema Audience Award, Dramatic: Valley of Saints / India, U.S.A.

Earlier in the festival, the Mahindra Global Filmmaking Awards were presented in recognition of emerging independent filmmakers from around the world and the projects they are developing:  Etienne Kallos/ VRYSTAAT (FREE STATE) from South Africa; Ariel Kleiman/ Partisan, from Australia; Dominga Sotomayor/ Late to Die Young, from Chile; and Shonali Bose/ Margarita With a Straw, from India.
