HOW THE F*** LONG CAN THIS GO ON?!

Hollywood está nervioso. Alrededor del 75% de la producción regular de películas y televisión ha estado detenida mientras los estudios esperan a ver si la huelga del gremio de los actores ocurrirá. Y ahora esto: esta tarde habrá una "Protesta de actores activistas" frente a los estudios Fox. No, la huelga no ha empezado. En cambio, en una época en donde todos en Hollywood están esperando para ver si tendrán trabajo. Peter Chernin, Director ejecutivo de Fox, ha lanzado leña al fuego declarando que ya no habrá repeticiones en FOX TV. Lo que pasará es que todos los programas irán direco a transmisión en internet, eliminando todos las regalías y las contribuciones establecidas por el sindicato a cobertura de salud y pensiones. ¿Este tipo está usando drogas? Aun si Fox planea hacer esto, hacer el anuncio en medio de las interminables negociones para evitar la huelga – cuando las regalías por el uso en internet es el punto medular de la disputa – es simplemente imprudente. Y justo cuando estabamos esperanzados que la gran nube negra pudiera desaparecer pronto.

Ha sido un muy amargo paseo en montaña rusa desde que el contrato de los actores expiró el pasado Junio, cuando Hollywood seguía tratando de recuperarse de la financieramente desastroza huelga de escritores. Por un lado tienes una petición para cancelar el voto para autorizar la huelga, argumentando que existe el riesgo de dejar a gente sin trabajo durante esta histórica crisis económica, firmada por actores de la lista A de Hollywood George Clooney, Tom Hanks, Cameron Diaz, Matt Damon, Charlize Theron, Edward Norton, etc. Por el otro lado una carta de respuesta pidiendo a los miembros a apoyar la huelga fue firmada por Mel Gibson (¿por qué esto no me sorprende?), Ed Harris, Holly Hunter y mas.

Un voto a favor por el 75% de los más de 120,000 miembros es necesario para que la medida sea aprobada. En este momento es un juego de espera.

Hollywood is nervous. Some 75% of the normal film and TV production has been on hold while studios wait to see whether or not the Screen Actors Guild strike will happen. And now this: this afternoon there will be an “Actor Activist Protest” in front of Fox Studios. No the strike hasn’t started. Instead, at a time when everyone in Hollywood is waiting to see if they have a job, Peter Chernin, CEO of Fox, has thrown fuel on the fire by declaring there will no longer be re-runs on Fox TV. Instead all programs will go directly to streaming on the internet, eliminating all residuals and union-mandated contributions to health coverage and pensions. What, is the guy on drugs? Even if Fox plans on doing this, to make the announcement now in the middle of this seemingly endless strike negotiation – when residuals for internet use is the prime bone of contention – is just plain reckless. And just when we were all getting our hopes up that the big black cloud might go away soon.

It’s been a very bitter roller coaster ride ever since the SAG contract ran out last June, when Hollywood was still reeling from the financially disastrous Writers’ Strike. On one side you have a petition to cancel the strike authorization vote and citing the risk of putting people out of work during this historic economic crisis, signed by A-list actors George Clooney, Tom Hanks, Cameron Diaz, Matt Damon, Charlize Theron, Edward Norton, etc. On the flip side a response letter asking members to support a strike, was signed by Mel Gibson (why dos this not surprise me?), Ed Harris, Holly Hunter and more.  

A yes vote by 75% of the 120,000+ members is necessary to pass the measure. At this point it’s just a waiting game.
