Al llegar a la fiesta después de la premiere en Chicago de Enemigos públicos, Johnny Depp, quien interpreta al famoso ladrón de bancos John Dillinger, fue acosado por una horda de fanáticos y paparazzi, y para un hombre que siempre parece muy relajado se veía seriamente abrumado. “Entonces no estoy loco, fue extraño ¿verdad?”, se ríe después. Sí, fue extraño. “Pero ¿esto no es normal cuando sales estos días?”, le pregunto. “Por eso no salgo de mi casa. No voy a ningún lado. En verdad no lo hago. Digo ¿para qué hacerlo? Nunca te acostumbras a este tipo de situaciones, no puedes. Si te acostumbras a este tipo de situaciones entonces estás loco. Digo, entiendo de que se trata y muy dentro de mí lo aprecio, pero hay un límite para las cosas con las que puede lidiar un ser humano. Es difícil vivir así. No entiendo cómo gente como Brad y Angelina, a un nivel completamente diferente, viven o lidian con esto. Yo no salgo de mi casa”.

Arriving at the party following the Chicago premiere of PUBLIC ENEMIES, Johnny Depp, who plays the infamous 1930’s bank robber John Dillinger, was swarmed by a mob of fans and paparazzi – and for a guy who always seems cool he seemed seriously overwhelmed. “So I’m not crazy, it was weird, right?” he laughs afterwards. Yeah it was weird. “But isn’t this normal when you go out these days?” I ask. “That’s why I don’t leave my house. I don’t go anywhere. I truly don’t. I mean, why would you? You never get used to that kind of thing, you can’t. If you get used to that kind of thing then you’re insane. I mean, I understand what it’s about and I appreciate it on a very profound level, but there’s only so much a human being can deal with. It’s hard to chew on. I don’t know how people like Brad and Angelina – which is a whole different level – live or deal. I don’t leave my house.”
Is that why the island? “Getting the island was like everything else in my life, it just kind of happened. I didn’t set out to buy an island. After PIRATES 1 I had done SECRET WINDOW and then went on vacation to escape with my girl and my kiddies and somebody said, “Oh by the way, down the road there’s an island for sale.” Truly it was just like that, and I said, “Well. Let’s go see.” I looked at it. I walked on the thing and went, “I’m done. It’s over with now. This has to be.” And I immediately called the business manager and said “Please.” And that was it. (laughing) It just sort of happened but it came at such a moment, when the PIRATES fame thing was just staring to commence. It can be perceived as a luxury and it certainly is, but it provides me with a simplicity, where you can go somewhere where no one’s looking at you and no one’s pointing a camera. You’re just there. You can just literally be. That’s the importance of it. We go there and do nothing. It’s perfect.”
