Justin Bieber: un buen chico

OK. Llega una hora y media tarde a nuestra entrevista, está ensayando para los Grammy y grabará su participación en el show de Jimmy Kimmel. Inexplicablemente y todo lo contrario a mi costumbre, estoy predispuesta a que no me caiga bien. Y luego aparece… y toda la anticipación negativa se diluye. Tan joven, tan lindo y confiado en sí mismo, pero al mismo tiempo sincero y, pues sí, apenas un niño. Y es buenísima onda. 

“Estaba nerviosísimo de cantar en los Grammy’s”, admite. “Todos mis colegas son parte del público”. Viendo hacia la calle desde la ventana en este segundo piso, puedo ver cómo crece la multitud de fans y paparazzi. ¿Cómo lidia este niño con tal caos a esta edad? “Sólo me alegra poder hacer lo que amo. Nunca pensé que esto sucedería, y mucho menos tan rápido. No sé cómo hubiese podido lograrlo sin mis fans y sin el apoyo de Internet y así. Creo que tienes que hacer que tu voz se oiga como sea, y el Internet es una gran herramienta para exponer tu música y dejar que la gente la escuche. Me pasó a mí y puede pasarle a quien sea. Hace cinco años las personas no contaban con eso, no podías interactuar con alguien y no podías anunciar que estarías en línea en una hora… y la gente aparece. Twitter es una muy buena herramienta y creo que definitivamente ha cambiado la manera en que evoluciona la industria de la música”.

Por lo general, los compositores son un poco más viejos, han tenido más años de vida, ¿de dónde obtiene él su inspiración? “Tu edad no importa a la hora de escribir canciones”, dice, muy serio. “No importa si tienes 16 ó 30, has experimentado la vida, y lo has hecho a tu propia manera. Mis papás tronaron cuando nací y por eso me he enfrentado a las emociones y cosas diferentes. He tenido relaciones, y hayan sido o no reales, la cosa es que sentí algo. Componer canciones es escribir sobre tus sentimientos y tus historias de vida”.

Hablando de historias, ¿qué es lo más raro que Justin ha leído sobre sí mismo? “Bueno, pues ya ha pasado que en la prensa se publique que estoy muerto”, ríe. “Sí, de hecho dijeron que había perecido en un accidente automovilístico. Y yo estaba así de ‘bueno, pues estoy segurísimo de que no estoy muerto, porque aquí ando’”.

Y así es. Debajo de todo el hype, Justin Bieber es un buen chico. Y sospecho que llegó para quedarse.

OK so he’s an hour and a half late for my interview, he’s rehearsing for the Grammy’s and taping The Jimmy Kimmel Show. Inexplicably and uncharacteristically, I find myself predisposed to dislike him. And then he shows up, and all that negative anticipation goes out the window. So young, so boyishly cute and confident, but at the same time sincere and well, he’s just a kid. And he’s really nice.

“I was really nervous about performing at the Grammy’s,” he admits. “Because like all of my peers watching.” Looking down to the street from this second story window, I can see the crowd of fans and paparazzi growing. How does this kid cope with all this at this age? “I’m just happy that I’m able to do what I love. I never thought this would happen at all, let alone so quickly. And I don’t know how I could do it without my fans and the support of the Internet and all that. I think that any way you can get yourself out there, the Internet is such a great tool to put your music out there and let other people hear it. It happened to me and it can happen to anyone. Five years ago people didn’t have that, you couldn’t interact with them and tell them where you were going to be in an hour and have people show up. Twitter is such a good tool and I think it’s definitely changed the way the music industry is evolving.”

Songwriters are usually a little older, they’ve lived life a few more years, where does he get his inspiration? “ It doesn’t really matter how old you are to write songs,” he says seriously. “No matter if you’re 16 or you’re 30, you’ve experienced life and you’ve experienced your experiences in your own way. My parents split up when I was born and so I’ve gone through emotions and different things. I’ve had relationships, and whether or not it was real, I felt something. I think writing songs is just writing about your feelings, life stories.”

Speaking of stories, what’s the weirdest thing he’s ever read about himself? “Well it’s been in the press that I was dead before,” he laughs. “Yeah they actually said I died in a bad car accident. And I was like, well I’m pretty sure that I am not dead, because I’m here.” And that he is. Underneath all the hype, Justin Bieber is a nice kid. And I suspect he’s here to stay.
