…  pensamientos acerca de la muerte de tres íconos

Farrah Fawcett 

Era 1978, apenas comenzaba a tomar fotografías cuando tuve un llamado de una revista para fotografiar al actor Jimmy Van Patten, muy popular en aquella época, y a su novia, la entonces desconocida Nicollette Sheridan (que años más tarde protagonizó Desperate Housewives). Estábamos en la sesión de fotos en la casa de la familia Van Patten cuando la amiga de Jimmy, Farrah Fawcett se apareció. Y aunque era ya un ícono no tenía actitud de estrella, era literalmente una hija de vecino risueña y con los pies en la tierra que venía a pasar el rato a la casa de su amigo y a hacer travesuras en la sesión fotográfica.

Ed McMahon

Puede ser difícil pensar en Ed McMahon como una estrella del mismo calibre que los otros dos íconos que perdimos recientemente, pero hubo un tiempo, en aquella época en donde Johnny Carson era el rey de la televisión nocturna, en donde McMahon con su inconfundible “Heeeere’s Johnny!” era una de las caras más queridas de la televisión. Y durante el clímax de su popularidad  él y Carson eran dueños de un restaurante llamado Derrick’s que se ubicaba en el segundo piso de un hotel corriente en Westwood. Sé esto porque my hermano trabajó ahí como mesero y su jefe, el maitre’d era Richard Simmons, quien más tarde se convertiría en el gurú de la pérdida de peso. Una noche cuando llegué para darle un aventón a casa, mi hermano les estaba sirviendo el postre a Carson, McMahon y sus esposas, pero se tropezó cuando me vio en la puerta. Parecía que la acción se daba en cámara lenta, viendo como lo que estaba en la charola se deslizaba sobre el cuerpo de las dos estupefactas mujeres, sus escotes ahora cubiertos de crema batida y fresas de tallo largo. Nunca olvidaré la cara de satisfacción que intercambiaron Carson y McMahon.

Michael Jackson

No tengo anécdotas personales del Rey del Pop, pero por supuesto que me conmocionó su muerte al igual que a todo el mundo. Farrah había estado enferma por largo tiempo y McMahon era viejo, pero Jackson nos tomó por sorpresa a todos. Y yo estaba presente la noche en que Hollywood decidió hacer una cosa realmente honorable para variar. En la premiere de ayer de BRUNO (donde irónicamente la alfombra roja estaba cubriendo la estrella de Michael Jackson en el Paseo de la Fama) me impresionó ver que el segmento de La Toya Jackson había sido borrado de la película, lo cual no es insignificante siendo que Michael Jackson  había muerto tan sólo unas horas antes de la proyección. La escena en cuestión muestra a La Toya Jackson siendo entrevistada en una casa rentada en donde Bruno utiliza a jardineros mexicanos a gatas como muebles. Mientras come sushi del cuerpo desnudo de un mexicano que sirve como mesa, Bruno le dice que se parece a su hermano y comienza a acosarla para conseguir el teléfono de Michael y trata de robarlo de su blackberry. Ella corre de la casa y el persigue su limusina gritando el nombre de Michael. Reportes sin confirmar indican que el estudio editará nuevamente las 3000 copias que ya están hechas para el estreno de la película.

Memories of Farrah

It was 1978 and I had just started taking pictures when I got a magazine assignment to shoot actor Jimmy Van Patten – very popular at the time – and his girlfriend, then unknown Nicollette Sheridan (who years later starred in Desperate Housewives.) We were doing the photographs at the Van Patten family home when Jimmy’s pal Farrah Fawcett showed up. And even though she was already iconic, there was no star attitude, she was literally just the giggly, down-to-earth girl next door who came over to goof around and disrupt her pal’s photo shoot.

Ed McMahon

It might be hard to think of Ed McMahon in the same celebrity strata as the other two icons we’ve just lost, but there was a time, back when Johnny Carson was the king of late-night TV, that Mc Mahon with his signature “Heeere’s Johnny!” was one of the best-loved faces on television. And during the height of his popularity, he and Carson owned a restaurant together called Derrick’s, located upstairs in a rather cheesy hotel in Westwood. I know this because my brother worked there as a waiter, and his boss, the maitre’d was Richard Simmons – who would go on to become the campy exercise/weight loss guru. One night when I arrived to give him a ride home, my sibling was just serving Carson, McMahon and their wives dessert, but he stumbled when he saw me at the door. It was like slow-motion, watching the contents of the tray slide onto the bosoms of the two stunned women, their cleavage now covered in whipped cream and long-stemmed strawberries. I will never forget the look of shared delight that passed between Carson and McMahon. 

Michael Jackson

I have no personal anecdotes about the King of Pop, but of course was as touched as everyone else by his passing. Farrah had been sick a long time, and Mc Mahon was old, but Jackson took us by surprise. And I was present last night when Hollywood chose to do a really honorable thing – for a change. At last night’s premiere of BRUNO (where ironically the red carpet was covering Michael Jackson’s star on the Walk of Fame) I was impressed to see that the La Toya Jackson segment had been deleted from the film – no small feat as Michael Jackson died only hours before the screening. The scene in question shows La Toya Jackson being interviewed at a rented house where Bruno is using Mexican gardeners on their hands and knees as furniture. As she eats sushi off of the naked-Mexican-as-serving-table, Bruno tells her she looks like her brother and starts harassing her to get Michael’s number and tries to steal it off her blackberry. She runs out of the house and he chases her limo down the street, calling Michael’s name. Unconfirmed reports indicate the studio will re-strike the 3000+ prints that had already been made for the upcoming release of the film.
