Russell Crowe
RUSSELL CROWE
One might think that the Aussie film community is a small, tight knit little family and they all know one another – because after all, when they huddle together at awards show it sure seems that way. But Russell Crowe says he barely had met Cate Blanchett at events when the two of them found themselves onstage together (along with Geoffrey Rush and Nicole Kidman) as commemorative “Australian Legends” postage stamps were being presented in their image. Like the actor has often done, Crowe’s stamp had actually created a bit of controversy due to the fact he was actually born in New Zealand and did not become an Australian citizen until 2006.
“It had come up very early in Robin HOOD conversations with Ridley [Scott],” recalls the actor. “Should we talk to Cate Blanchett? And suddenly I’m sitting there on a stage with her. A couple thousand people in the audience to celebrate our being made into postage stamps. And I’m looking at Cate, she was telling the audience that she couldn’t wait to be licked by thousands of Australians. (laughing.) And I leaned ever and whispered in her ear, ‘You know, they’re self-adhesive these days!’ And then they passed the microphone to me. So instead of talking about the honor of being on a stamp or whatever I was supposed to be talking about, I just asked the audience, ‘Does anybody here think that Cate Blanchett and I should make a movie together?’ And of course the response was overwhelming. So the next day when I called her about playing Marion to my Robin Hood, she wasn’t too surprised”.
