“Indie film is not dead yet!” says Robert Redford. “There’s always the bleak view for independent film but it does manage to survive.” And this is exactly what I personally love about Sundance –in spite of all the critics and nay-sayers,  changing economies and changing definitions of what’s independent, Redford’s original dream to nurture the independent spirit of movie making continues to survive and thrive here in Utah. And that determination is repeated  again and again onscreen in written words at the start of every movie here this year, like a mantra:

“This is the renewed rebellion, this is the recharged fight against the establishment of the expected. This is the rebirth of the battle for new ideas."

Its always been a launch pad for films from ‘sex lies and videotape’ to last year’s Precious – but for every breakout hit there are dozens of good little movies that never get distribution and never get seen. OK, it’s true, many of them are too dark or too quirky. As one studio executive says, “You know you’re in Sundance when you go to see a comedy and it opens with a little boy being killed by his crack ho mother – and that’s the ‘funny’ part!” But the festival’s new director John Cooper is bringing 8 films and their directors to 8 cities – from San Francisco to Philadelphia, essentially taking the festival on the road. It’s only one of the many changes afoot here in Park City. As Redford says, “Sometimes going back to your roots can make things fresh again.” This year blizzard conditions have presented some challenges, but a little snow never stopped me from getting to those screenings! Opening night film Howl is a sort of experimental narrative starring James Franco as beat poet Allen Ginsberg that I found to be a fascinating glimpse of historic pop culture, but the critics have skewered it. I have also liked, in varying degrees: Restrepo, an Iraq documentary from journalist Sebastian Junger, who wrote A Perfect Storm; Get Low – a funky western starring Robert Duvall and Bill Murray; a dysfunctional romantic dark comedy Cyrus, from the Duplass brothers, stars Jonah Hill, John C Reilly and Marisa Tomei; Blue Valentine, one of the “buzz films’ here, stars Ryan Gosling and Michelle Williams; Jack Goes Boating marks Phillip Seymour Hoffman’s directorial debut; ditto for Mark Ruffalo’s Sympathy for Delicious. My two favorites so far are the creepy Buried with Ryan Reynolds spending much of the film locked in a casket;  and Welcome to the Rileys starring James Gandolfini, Melissa Leo and Kristen Stewart as a trash-talking stripper. Best of all, three and a half days in, I haven’t seen anything terrible…
