Waterworld redux

In case you’ve had nothing better to do than spend sleepless nights wondering what Kevin Costner’s been up to – well now we know. The star best known for his roles in Field of Dreams and Dances With Wolves has been out of the limelight after a series of decidedly unmemorable films, though to be fair, his name has come up recently, favorably compared to Russell Crowe in reviews of the latest Robin Hood movie.

It seems Costner’s been spending his off-screen time diversifying into environmental technologies, forming Costner Industries Nevada Corp. with his scientist-brother Dan, and focusing on centrifuge filtering inventions that can separate oil from water. On Thursday he arrived in the Lousiana bayou offering local officials access to their technologies in hopes of helping save the delicate marshlands and ecosystems from the horrific BP oil spill in the Gulf of Mexico.

"We moved this through a technology that we know works, and it’s prepared to go out and solve problems, not talk about them," Costner said. "I’m very sad about why it is, but this is why it was developed, and like anything that we all face as a group, we face it together."

Though some officials are skeptical, St. Bernard Parish President Craig Taffaro says, “We will be pushing for this to at least get a demonstration out in the open water to put this to a test. If it shows what it shows here on land, then we may have found ourselves another tool for the tool box."
