Joaquin Phoenix, The Master, Terence Malick y más…

Bizarre Behavior, Boos and Standing Ovations

At the press conference for The Master during de Venice Film Festival, Joaquin Phoenix mumbled a few words, dragged on a cigarette, then got booed when he stopped his photo shoot after just 14 seconds. It was unclear if Phoenix’s behavior was genuine or if the whole thing was just a stunt- recalling the similar speculation over the so-called documentary about his downward spiral in 2010, I’m Still Here.

In his first return to the big screen in years, Phoenix plays a tortured World War II veteran who falls under the spell of a charismatic cult leader played by Hoffman. Anderson freely admits he based the story on the early days of Scientology and its controversial founder L. Ron Hubbard. Throughout the awkward event his co-star Philip Seymour Hoffman and director Paul Thomas Anderson did their best to ignore his antics. Hoffman tried to lighten things up, getting a laugh when he  suggested that most people dream of indulging their basest impulses. «I think we wake up every morning going, Fuck, why can’t I run naked through the streets of Venice and just eat shit? Why can’t I do that and have it be okay? Is it possible I can have sex with everyone I see today? I know I can’t but I wish that was possible.”

The other most anticipated film to screen here has been To the Wonder, from Terence Malick – a beautifully visual kind of postcard – if somewhat elusive – to love that, at the first screening, inspired loud boos from half of the audience and a standing ovation from the other half. With the reclusive filmmaker absent, and stars Ben Affleck, Javier Bardem and Rachel McAdams unable to attend due to work schedules, that left only the lovely Olga Kurylenko on the red carpet. “Terence sees inside you,” she says. “He told me shocking things he saw inside myself. He sees me, he sees my past.”

Meanwhile, at the Telluride Film Festival promoting his film Argo, Ben Affleck told the press that “To the Wonder makes Tree of Life look like Transfomers.”

Besides those two big canvas, high expectation movies, a few others worth mentioning include: At Any Price, a drama about the future of a mid-western family farm, directed by Ramin Bahrani and starring Zac Efron as the son who sees his future behind the wheel of a race car rather than a tractor. Not even on the buzz radar, Disconnect – directed by Henry Alex Rubin and starring Alex Skarsgard, Jason Bateman and Paula Patton, is an unexpected gem about people trying to make human connections in a world preoccupied with technology. And the violent crime caper Outrage Beyond from legendary Japanese director Takeshi Kitano should satisfy lovers of early Tarantino.
