Jon Cryer in space with Ashton Kutcher!

“Ashton is – is a nut,”  laughs Jon Cryer. It
was the first time since the whole Charlie Sheen scandal since we had been able
to sit down together, friends from his pre-TWO AND A HALF MEN days. “It’s
been a roller-coaster ride and like a roller-coaster ride it’s a little bit
scary but mostly fun.
After doing a show
for 9 seasons or 8 seasons at that point, getting a whole bunch of new
challenges is incredibly exciting and that was what was great about the Emmy
recognition this year – you don’t get awards like that without the writers
really giving you amazing flaming hoops to jump through.”

What about the future of the show? “You know what, I just
brought home an Emmy, as a lead this time, not supporting – so something is
obviously working. And what’s lovely about the future of the show right now is
it’s unclear, we don’t know where it’s going to go, we don’t know how many more
years we have. I think I will do it to the end of my contract and then I don’t
know. It also really depends on how much Ashton wants to do it. He’s an
adventurer. He informed me last year that he was intending to go on the
first Virgin Galactic private space flight and I was like, ‘Good on you, that
sounds exciting. Sure hope you live – because, you know, it’s a rocket.’
Then a few weeks ago he asked me to go on a
training flight with him because he’s got to get ready. So there’s this company
called Go Zero G that will do the Zero G training flights that NASA does, the
exact same things but for private individuals and several of the people going
on the Virgin Galactic Flight had already made plans to go and so he said ‘Hey,
you want to join me?’ and I said ‘Sure.’ So we went and they give you very
specific instructions about what you’re supposed to eat before you do it, what
you’re not supposed to do the night before like drink alcohol of any kind
because motion sickness is always a worry on those flights. But apparently
Ashton flouted those rules and we made it to about 3 of the weightless periods
before he started to hurl, the likes of which it was remarkable. Well, the
thing is we looked super cool because we were wearing flight suits
and we couldn’t help but walk everywhere in slow motion because it’s just what
you have to do when you’re wearing a flight suit because you are the coolest
guy in the room.
So of course he had
hooked up a Go Pro camera, one of those little HD cameras to his chest, the
idea being that he was going to float around in weightlessness and capture all
the people having a great time and floating around in weightlessness. And he
did that for the first 3 loops. The 4th loop not such a pretty
picture. So he has to go back up again which I may accompany him on because I
had a blast. And we’re having a blast on the show, too.

Ashton is like me – a bit of a clown with almost less
dignity than I have which is remarkable.
I
thought I was the low bar but he’s willing to go anywhere for a joke.
And that gives us a lot of fun things to play off
of. When you’ve done a show 8 or 9 seasons, it can be exciting to shake things
up. I have no regrets.”
