Saoirse Ronan, belleza en la alfombra roja

En la nueva cinta de Wes Anderson, El Gran Hotel Budapest (The Grand Budapest Hotel), Saoirse Ronan interpreta a una joven mujer con una gran marca con la forma de México en el rostro –es un contraste muy grande con la definición usual de belleza en las películas y publicidad de hoy en día. Durante la temporada de premios, y especialmente con los Oscares a la vuelta de la esquina, ¿cómo lidia con la presión de verse bien cada vez que sale por la puerta?

“Realmente no siento mucha presión”, dice riendo. “Digo, no me toman tantas fotos como a otra gente, lo cual sí entiendo que ha de ser muy molesto. Con la alfombra roja y esas cosas, yo prefiero usar prendas cómodas y creo que eso me facilita mucho la vida. Sin embargo, con el personaje de Agatha, siento que es lo opuesto. No creo que su apariencia la defina en lo más mínimo. Creo que ésa es la belleza de las historias de Wes, que él suele añadirle un detalle o un elemento extraño que no necesariamente es parte de la trama, pero que añade algo que vuelve al personaje más interesante y único. Creo que la marca en el rostro es mencionada y pronto olvidada”.

Pero, ¿siente que en general hay alguna presión con verse hermosa?
“En general, sí hay presión para lucir perfecta. Creo que hay muchas imágenes. Hay una campaña que he visto en Estados Unidos que me parece espantosa y es de unas niñas en tanga, con nada más puesto y odio pensar en las jovencitas que ven a mujeres anunciando ropa así. Sí creo que existe presión para verse de una cierta forma. Y que esos estándares los decidió alguien más y nos dice lo que se supone es sexy y hermoso…y me parece muy tonto”.

¿Y qué debe hacer una actriz que trabaja en una industria que gira alrededor de la imagen?
“Yo tengo una gran estilista en Los Ángeles, Samantha McMillen, y ella sabe exactamente cuál es mi estilo y el tipo de cosa que me gusta usar. Sabe que no me voy a poner algo que no me gusta. Pero siempre he sido así. Me acuerdo que al principio, cuando empezaba a hacer cosas de prensa de niña, no tenía un estilista y siempre me estresaba mucho qué ponerme. Me acuerdo que una vez me puse un vestido para una premiere y justo antes me encontré a alguien de la producción que me preguntó que si eso era lo que me iba a poner. Me sugirió que mejor buscara algo más y le dije que no, que yo quería usar esto. Siempre he estado muy segura de lo que quiero y si no me siento cómoda con algo, ni siquiera le daré una oportunidad”.

¿Y en esta alfombra roja posiblemente lluviosa?
“Tendremos que esperar a ver, ¿no?”.

In Wes Anderson’s new movie The Grand Budapest Hotel,
Saoirse Ronan plays a young woman with a huge birthmark in the shape of Mexico
on her face – quite a contrast for the commercial definition of beauty in
movies and advertising these days. During awards season, and especially with
the Oscars just around the corner, how does this sassy young Irish woman deal
with the pressure to look good every time she goes out the door?

“I don’t really feel the pressure,” she laughs. “I mean, I
don’t really get photographed as much as some people do so I am sure I can see how it would start to get
to some people. With red carpet stuff and things like that, for me, I want to
wear something that I am comfortable with, and I think that just makes the
whole thing a little bit easier. However with the character of Agatha, I kind
of feel it’s the opposite. I don’t really think her appearance defines her at
all. I think that’s the beauty of Wes’ stories, that he will add a little
detail or a little quirk that isn’t necessary to the story, but it’s just adds something
to make that character a little more interesting and individual. I think the
birthmark is just kind of mentioned in passing and then it’s forgotten about.”

But does she think there’s too much pressure to look
beautiful, in life in general? 

“In general yeah, to look perfect there is. I think there’s
so many images, there’s one campaign that I’ve seen around the States recently
that I think is just atrocious and it’s girls in thongs wearing nothing and I
would hate to think of other young girls to see women like that publicizing a
clothing brand. So I do think there’s pressure to look a certain way that
somebody is deciding, okay, this is what you need to look like now and this is
what’s sexy and this is what’s beautiful, and it’s silly.

And yet, working in an industry that’s all about image,
what’s an actress to do?

“Well, I have a really, really great stylist in LA, Samantha
McMillen, and she knows exactly my style and the kind of stuff that I like to
wear. She knows I won’t wear what I don’t like. But I have always been that way.
I remember at the start, when I started to do press when I was a kid, and I
didn’t have a stylist and it was very, very stressful to choose what you are
going to wear. I remember one time I wore, I was going to wear a dress that I
loved to a premiere, and then before the red carpet I ran into someone who was
involved in the film and they said Oh is that what you are going to wear?  Maybe you try should something else? And I
was like no, this is what I am going to wear. So I have always been pretty set
in my ways in that way and if I am not comfortable in something I won’t really
give it a chance.”

So on this weekend’s possibly rainy red carpet? “You’ll
just have to wait and see now, won’t you?”
