¡El regreso de Jack Bauer!

En el set del cuartel general de la CIA –cuya locación es casi tan secreta como lo sería su versión en la vida real – está Kiefer Sutherland de regreso en la piel de Jack Baurer filmando un reboot de 12 episodios llamado 24: Live Another Day. La trama es tan clasificada como la locación, pero parece que desde la última vez que lo vimos, Jack ha estado viviendo como fugitivo en algún lugar del este de Europa escondiéndose de los norteamericanos y de los rusos. Cuando se encuentra con cierta información sobre un posible ataque contra el presidente de Estados Unidos, él tiene que regresar y lo hace acompañado de su vieja compañera Chloe (May Lynn Rajskub), quien ahora es parte de un grupo de hackers al estilo Julian Assange. En una carrera contra el reloj, ¿lograrán salvar al presidente?

¿Cómo funcionan 12 episodios si el show se llama 24? «Cada episodio está hecho en tiempo real», dice Kiefer. «Pero al final del episodio 3, si decido ir a París para encontrar a alguien o alguna información, podríamos terminar conmigo subiendo a un tren y comenzar el que sigue conmigo bajando. Cuando hacíamos 24 capítulos en tiempo real, a veces terminábamos en una escena en un tren ya comiendo cacahuates. ¡No funcionaba! Aquí tenemos una gran oportunidad en términos de cómo contar la historia y para mí esa fue una razón muy emocionante para volver a hacerlo».

En la década de los 60 y 70, las películas o shows de espías siempre hablaban de cosas muy improbables, pero hoy ya estamos viviendo muchas de esas cosas. ¿Qué tan cerca del mundo político real llegarán? «Creo que, es una pregunta más grande, creo que incluso habría que regresar al principio. Cuando Joel Surnow y Bob Cochran escribieron 24, era un concepto muy lejano. Y luego a los 6 meses sucedió el 9/11. Digo, nosotros teníamos a una mujer que salía disparada de su asiento, luego el avión explota, ella era terrorista y era su forma de entrar al país. Luego a los pocos meses, sucedió lo del World Trade Center e incluso la más pequeña de las comparaciones era horrble. Al grado de que ya nadie quería hacer el show… literalmente. Anduvimos semanas preguntándonos qué íbamos a hacer, todo nos parecía estúpido. Luego el segundo año lidiamos con armas químicas y fue cuando agarraron al tipo ese viniendo de Vancouver a Seattle con antrax. Escribían cosas en el show y luego de alguna forma extraña, a los 6 o 7 meses lo veíamos suceder o notábamos un paralelo extraño con algún evento real en el mundo. Esta vez, nos dimos cuenta de que el show siempre ha tenido un aspecto político importante y eso comenzó la discusión. Eso dicho, Jack Bauer permanece fuera de la política, lo cual creo que es muy importante. Él tiene una meta muy específica, que es salvar a alguien o proteger algo en particular.

El show comienza en mayo. Yo estoy emocionada… ¿Ustedes?

On the set of the CIA’s London headquarters – the location
of which is almost as top secret as the real one would be – Kiefer Sutherland is
back in the skin of Jack Bauer, shooting a 12-episode reboot titled 24: Live
Another Day. The plot is as classified as the location, but it seems that in
the years since we last saw him, Jack’s been living a fugitive life somewhere
in Eastern Europe, hiding from both the Americans and the Russians. But when he
comes across intelligence that suggests the U.S. president is in imminent
danger, he’s forced to resurface, hooking up with his old associate Chloe (Mary Lynn Rajskub), who is now
part of a group Assange-type hackers. Racing against the ticking clock, can they save the president? 

But 12 episodes, how does that work when the show is called
24? “Every episode is done in real time,’ he says. «But at the end of episode three, if I
chose to go to Paris because I needed to find someone or find some information,
we could end with me getting on a train and we could start the next episode with
me getting off the train. When we were doing 24 episodes in real time, you
would be stuck with me on a train eating peanuts (laughs) and that didn’t work.
So there’s a huge opportunity here for us in the storytelling to kind of open up
and to me was a really exciting reason to kind of try it again.”

Back in the 1960s and ‘70s spy-genre movies or TV shows were
always far-fetched, but now we seem to be living a lot of that… so how close to
the real political world will the show go now? 
“I think, it’s a large question, even going back to the very beginning.
When Joel Surnow and Bob Cochran wrote 24, it was as far-fetched an idea as you
can get. And then we found ourselves six months into shooting having to edit
our first episode because of the terrible events of 9/11. I mean we had a woman
who ejected herself out of a plane, who blew the plane up, she was a terrorist,
and that was her way of getting into the country. And six months later we had
people flying planes into the World Trade Center and even the slightest
comparison was horrific, to the degree that no one wanted to make the show, I
mean literally. We walked around for weeks going why are we doing this? This is
stupid. Year Two, we ended up dealing with chemical weapons and they caught the
guy coming from Vancouver through Seattle with all of the Anthrax. And they
would write stuff and somehow in a very weird way, six months later, seven
months later, you would watch it have some weird kind of connection or parallel
to what was happening in the world. This time, we decided together actually
that there’s been a political quantity to our show that has mattered, that has
actually spawned discussion. Having said that, Jack Bauer still kind of remains
uniquely apolitical, which I think is really important. He is after a very specific
goal or agenda, which is to save somebody or protect a specific thing.”

The show will start airing in May… I’m excited. Are you?
