It would be pretty surreal anytime to be hanging out with
Mick Jagger,
but it seems especially so on this night, at the historic Apollo
Theater
in Harlem where we are celebrating the premiere of GET ON UP, the movie
he produced, about the legendary King of Funk, James Brown. The air is literally
alive with the spirit of soul, making it easy to imagine what it must have been
like that night in the 1950s when Brown started out there on Amateur Night, or
later when he returned to record “Live at the Apollo.

It hasn’t been the easiest year for the 70-year-old Rolling Stone
following the shocking suicide in March of his longtime girlfriend L’Wren Scott
(fashion designer to stars such as Penelope Cruz and Nicole Kidman).“I’m doing
OK. It’s been it’s difficult,” he says, “but I got back into it by working on
touring with the Stones in Europe and sinking myself into working on producing this
great movie.” And why this movie, this subject? “I was inspired and influenced by Brown early on. I had already met him when I was young, I had been to the Apollo and I had hung out with him. I
think he was one of the great performers, a full on, super high energy stage
performer and so I always admired the way he always gave 100 percent, the way
he danced, the way he played the audience, the way he could have them in the
palm of his hand. It was especially important to me to get him right. Not
everything James Brown does in the film is likable but I still wanted the
audience to be pulling for him. So to me, that was very important, so that
script part of it was very close to me, and obviously, I was very concerned
with how the performances would come off, and I was very interested in which
songs were to be featured in the concert sequences. It was quite a lot to think
about really.”

Jagger was accompanied at the premiere by his daughter
Elizabeth, 30, and his look-alike son Lucas, 14. Directed by Tate Taylor (THE HELP), the film stars Chadwick
Boseman
as Brown, with Dan Aykroyd, Viola Davis, Octavia Spencer and Nelsan
Ellis.
