Birdman de Iñárritu sacude a Venecia

El que yo tuviera que cancelar mi viaje anual al Festival de Cine de Venecia no evitó que hasta acá a Hollywood se escuchara el gran buzz que ha generado la nueva cinta de Alejandro González Iñárritu, Birdman (o la inespereda virtud de la ignorancia), la cual inauguró la 71 Muestra Internacional de Cine de Venecia el miércoles pasado. Colegas míos en la alfombra roja estuvieron usando frases como «fenomenal», «absurda e infecciosa», «introspectiva e inteligente», «una obra maestra» y «¡jodidamente brillante!».

Michael Keaton interpreta a un actor famoso por interpretar a un superhéroe icónico que ahora intenta revivir su carrera dirigiendo y protagonizando una obra en Broadway: una adaptación de la colección de cuentos cortos de Raymond Carver ¿De qué hablamos cuando hablamos de amor? Sin embargo, ya que se acerca la noche de apertura, él lucha contra su propio ego mientras intenta reconstruir y recuperar a su familia, su carrera y a sí mismo. Edward Norton, Emma Stone, Naomi Watts, Zach Galifianakis, Andrea Riseborough y Amy Ryan coprotagonizan.

Las comparaciones con la carrera de Keaton son inevitables gracias a sus dos turnos como Batman en las cintas de Tim Burton. «¿Me sigue Batman por todos lados», se pregunta él. «Sin duda tuvo un efecto porque fue muy revolucionaria. Creo que lo que la hizo tan grande fue el hecho de ser la primera y sí cambió mi vida. Cuando algo explota así a un nivel internacional, es una cosa totalmente diferente, y aunque ya era yo un actor conocido, eso era principalmente en EUA.  Creo que eso fue lo primero que cambió y la realidad es que sí es un asunto grande. No tengo problema con ello. Me gusta pensar que Batman no me sigue por ahí. Nada me sigue. Aunque sí me gustaría decir que todos tenemos un Birdman en la vida. Pero no podemos dejar que esa cosa guíe nuestras vidas.

Well even though I had to cancel my annual trek to the Venice Film Festival, it didn’t matter because I can hear the
buzz all the way from there to here in Hollywood, as Alejandro G. Inarritu’s film Birdman
or (The Unexpected Virtue of Ignorance) opened the 71st Venice Film
Festival on Wednesday to raves. Colleagues on the red carpet and at the before
and after gala festivities are using words like “phenomenal”, “infectiously
absurd”, “thoughtful and smart”, “masterful”, “fucking brilliant!” 

Michael Keaton
plays an actor famous for formerly portraying an iconic superhero, and who is
now attempting to breathe life into his fading career by directing and starring
in a Broadway play, an adaptation of Raymond Carver’s short story collection What We Talk About When We Talk About Love.
But as the play’s opening approaches, he struggles with his own ego as he attempts
to rebuild his life and recover his family, his career, and himself. Edward Norton, Emma Stone, Naomi Watts,
Zach Galifianakis, Andrea Riseborough and Amy Ryan all co-star. 

The comparisons to Keaton’s own career are inevitable thanks
to his two appearances as Batman with
Tim Burton at the helm. “Does Batman follow me around?» Keaton
muses. «Certainly it had an effect, because it was so groundbreaking.
Tim’s vision has been copied and changed, but it was the first one. «I was
part of that and proudly so, and I totally embrace it. I think the big deal was
the fact it was the first, and it did change my life. When something breaks on
an international level, that’s a whole new deal, and although I was a known
actor, it was primarily in the USA. I think that was the first thing that
changed, and the reality is, that is a big thing. I’m okay with it, and I’d
like to say that Batman doesn’t
follow me around. Nothing follows me around. I would like to say, though, that
we all have a Birdman in our life. We just can’t allow him to have the driving
seat in our life.»
