Tom Hardy en los zapatos de Mel Gibson

A diferencia de su coestrella Charlize Theron (quien siempre es encantadora), Tom Hardy siempre luce incómodo en las entrevistas. Y el día de prensa de Mad Max Furia en el camino no fue la excepción. El actor murmulla y se traba al hablar. E inmediatamente después, se pone a hablar durante 10 minutos sin tomar un solo respiro y todo en una sola oración.

Aún así, en cuanto se pone a hablar sobre este papel, toda incomodidad desaparece. «Cuando me dieron el papel y una vez que se me quitó la emoción inicial (y es que, en serio, me siento muy agradecido de ser Mad Max), me cayó el veinte de que Mad Max es sinónimo de Mel Gibson y todo el mundo lo ama. Ahí no hay matices. Mel Gibson es Mad Max y punto. Si no es Mel, no es Mad Max. Eso fue muy intimidante. Y es que es un poco como cuando entras a una escuela nueva y quieres caerle bien a todos… pero estaba yo entrando a algo que posiblemente todos iban a odiar simplemente porque no les gusta el cambio.

«De lo que me di cuenta es que George Miller creó a Mad Max en ese mundo post-apocalíptico y fue la imaginación de George la que volvió a Mel Gibson, Max. Y George también creó esta pequeña película de persecuciones en auto y ha continuado meditando y avanzando ese mundo a lo largo de 40 años. Ahora se trataba de entrar a algo nuevo. Entendí que no tenía que preocuparme mucho y confiar en el hecho de que George me pidió a mí interpretar a Max y sería mi relación con George la que anclaría mi interpretación de su visión.

«Sí me reuní con Mel Gibson. Me pareció apropiado hablarle y tocar base con él porque es una familia, la familia Mad Max. Ha sido así por 30 o 40 años, así que es un poco como ser la esposa nueva –ríe– y tener que ir a conocer a la exesposa, pero ya hay niños de por medio y ahora yo tengo la custodia y debo protegerlos también. George es el patriarca de la familia y ahora yo soy Max».

Por fin toma un respiro y sonríe. Por cierto, ¿ya mencioné que en la vida real es mucho más atractivo que esa foto que le tomé?

Unlike his ever-charming co-star Charlize Theron, Tom Hardy
always seems a little uncomfortable in interviews, and the Mad Max Fury Road press day
was no exception. As in, he stumbles and mumbles over his words but then can
speak for ten minutes without taking a breath and it’s all one endless sentence. But once he starts
talking about this role which he loved so much, the awkwardness disappears. “After
I got cast, when I got over the immediate jubilation and excitement because,
you know, I’m really grateful to play Mad Max. Very excited about that, I
suddenly realized that actually Mad Max is synonymous with Mel Gibson and
obviously everybody loves Mel being, you know, as Mad Max, that’s who Mad Max
is and there’s no grey area there really. It’s quite black and white. If it’s
not Mel it’s not Mad Max and so that was a little bit daunting in the fact as,
you know, being the new boy at school you want to be liked but you’re walking
into something where possibly people are going to dislike the change, or the
handover of Maxes. So what I had to realize at that point was that it’s George
who created Mad Max in that post-apocalyptic world and George with his imagination
that gave birth to that world with Mel being Max at the time. And George also
gave birth to this little car chase movie in many ways as well and his further
adventure along that journey of the meditation that George has had over the
last 40 years of creating this world. It was about going into a new era of
development with it so I didn’t have to worry too much about that because really
I just had to rely on the fact that George had asked me to come and play his
Max today and that my relation with George was what was going to be the anchor towards
now providing a comfort in just transmuting George’s vision as he wants it to
be in the role of Max today. But still, yes, I did meet with Mel Gibson. I
thought it was the right thing to go and to touch base and meet him because it’s
a family, the Mad Max family, and has been for some 30, 40 years so
it’s a little bit like being the new wife, (laughing), and having to go and
meet the old wife and they’ve got kids together now, and I suppose I have
custody of those children in some way and I have to protect them as well. So George
ultimately is the patriarch of that family and now I’m playing Max.”

He finally takes a breath, then grins that familiar grin. Did
I mention that he is much more attractive in person than my photos of him?
