¿Boicotear o no?

El Coyote is a funky Mexican restaurant in Hollywood that’s been an entertainment industry hangout since 1931. Oh the ambiance is tacky, the drinks are strong and cheap and the food notoriously bad, but that’s all part of what we love about it. Infamous for being the place where Sharon Tate ate her last meal before being murdered by the Manson family, it’s also famous for being the ‘guilty pleasure’ of stars like Brad Pitt and Jennifer Aniston back when they were still a couple.
Sadly now El Coyote is in the middle of the Prop. 8 Ban on Gay Marriage controversy. (Yes the protests are still going on!) You see, most of the waiters and a large portion of their clientele happen to be gay. It also happens that Margie, the owner (daughter of the original owner) happens to be Mormon, and when the Church told her to donate money to help ban gay marriage, she did so. And when that information leaked out to an already agitated gay rights activist community, the shit, as they say, hit the fan.
In the aftermath of a massive protest staged outside the restaurant, Margie held a press conference whereby she tried to explain herself and how much she loved her gay customers and gay staff, how they were all like family to her. But then she started justifying her faith-based donation and the crowd got unruly. Since then a plethora of blogs and facebook groups have popped up, asking us to stand united in a boycott of this favorite haunt.
But I’m not sure how I feel about that. I am vehemently opposed to Prop 8, but I like El Coyote. The waiters there are my friends, we’ve been going there for so many years. Do I want them to lose their income which is largely tip money because the management holds a different political view than I do? Isn’t that being as judgmental as the conservatives?
