Johnny Depp says goodbye yo Captain Jack – But is it?

If Pirates Of The Caribbean: On Stranger Tides is to be the last installment of the blockbuster franchise, they certainly sent it off with a bang on Saturday night at Disneyland, the first ever outdoor 3-D premiere, complete with 2,700 foot long “black carpet” packed with 25,000 fans hoping to catch a glimpse of Johnny Depp.

Which they finally did, first a fake Johnny (a pretty good fake too, see photo) complete with fake hovering publicists, walking the carpet and waving to cheering fans.

Finally when the real Johnny had arrived, skipping the press line and jumping straight over to the fans, and all the stars had been introduced onstage and more than 10,000 lights at the theme park were turned off o the film could start, a light rain started to fall.

Disney might not have been able to control the weather, but they had thought of everything – so wrapping ourselves in provided blankets, the audience – dressed in pirate garb as the invitation had requested, didn’t seem to mind the drizzle. When the film ended at 11:30, to a spectacular fireworks show, there was still time to take advantage of the empty park and catch a couple of rides before heading home. But is this really the last of Captain Jack?

“Well you know, you toy with the idea of saying goodbye to a character at the end of a film like Pirates,” Depp told me a few days earlier. “But there’s always something in the back of your head going, ‘I think I might see you again.’ It’s always very sad, and strange to say goodbye to a character."

"You always feel like you’ve lost a piece of yourself in a way. The first time I looked at the script of Pirates of the Caribbean, the very first one, the character wasn’t exactly what he eventually became. But I felt there were ingredients there that inspired me, and suddenly I started getting these waves of ideas about what this Captain Jack could be. It’s a rare thing. And what’s even more rare is when you’re aware that it’s rare, when you have an awareness that this is a sort of once in a lifetime deal. Only now (laughing) it’s a four in a lifetime deal.”  So far, Johnny, so far….

What do you think, have you had enough or is there room for one or two more adventures?
