Johnny Depp escoge papeles excéntricos para la gran pantalla, pero en su último papel no hay trazos de fantasía: es un activista contra la injusticia. El actor hizo una rara aparición en un programa de CBS llamado 48 Hour Mystery, donde se unió a una larga lista de celebridades que apoyan la investigación de tres veredictos que pusieron a tres hombres en prisión por homicidio, uno de los cuales fue sentenciado a pena de muerte.
?Los "tres de West Memphis", como se les ha llamado en la prensa, fueron sentenciados en 1994 por asesinar a tres niños de ocho años y ya han habido dos documentales de HBO –The Child Murders at Robin Hood Hills y Paradise Lost 2: Revelations– que sugieren que los hombres son inocentes.
Los tres eran adolescentes cuando los crímenes sucedieron y todos fueron perfilados por la policía por usar ropa oscura y escuchar música heavy metal, y desde el principio ha habido una reacción pública. "Yo creo firmemente que Damien Echols, James Baldwin y Jessie Misskelley son inocentes –dice Depp–. Fue una necesidad de justicia para calmar a la comunidad". Él, como Winona Ryder, Eddie Edder y otras celebridades, esperan que reabrir el caso le eche una luz a la evidencia forense y de ADN que al final limpiará el nombre de estos tres jóvenes.

Johnny Depp may choose eccentric roles for the big screen, but there’s no hint of fantasy in his latest role – that of activist against injustice. Appearing in a rare television interview last weekend on the CBS show 48 Hour Mistery, the actor joined a growing list of celebrities rallying support for the investigation into the guilty verdicts that put three men in prison for homicide – one of whom faces the death penalty.
The “West Memphis Three” as they’ve been dubbed in the press, were convicted in 1994 of murdering three 8-year-old boys, and there have already been two HBO documentaries: The Child Murders at Robin Hood Hills and Paradise Lost 2: Revelations which suggest the convicted men were innocent.
Teenagers at the time of the crime, the three were profiled by police for wearing dark clothing and listening to heavy metal music, and there has been public outcry about their conviction from the beginning. “I firmly believe Damien Echols, James Baldwin and Jessie Misskelley are totally innocent,” says Depp. “It was a need for swift justice to placate an outraged community.” He, like Winona Ryder, Eddie Vedder and other celebrities, are hoping a re-opening of the case will highlight forensic and DNA evidence that will finally clear these three young men.
