Gerard Butler y su madurez

En su nueva película, Machine Gun Preacher, Gerard Butler protagoniza la historia verdadera de Sam Childers, un ex-traficante de drogas convertido en Cristiano y ahora comprometido con rescatar niños soldados en Sudán. O por lo menos eso dice el log-line, el término Hollywoodense para reducir una trama compleja a una sola oración.

Para Butler, además del reto que representó tener a Childers en persona en el set, la emoción de la historia por momentos lo sobrecogió al pensar en las horribles circunstancias en que estuvieron estos niños, quienes fueron arrancados de sus hogares y forzados a luchar, e incluso a veces a matar a su propia familia.

Al preguntarle a Childers sobre su propia niñez y lo que lo llevó hacia las drogas, él dice que proviene de una familia muy normal y que no le puede echar la culpa a sus padres por su comportamiento rebelde. “Sí, yo iba a decir lo mismo, que vengo de una familia normal –dice Butler–. Pero luego pienso que mi madre se divorció muy joven, mi padre tenía sus propios problemas y yo crecí sin él. Aparte de eso, pues sí vengo de una familia normal”, concluye riendo.

“Curiosamente, mi padre regresó cuando yo tenía 16 años y yo ni siquiera sabía que estaba vivo. Llegué a casa un día y ahí estaba mi padrastro, en ese momento era el novio de mi madre, y me dijo ‘No te quites la chamarra, tu padre está aquí’. Fuimos a verlo a un restaurant y me tuve que pasear por varias mesas preguntándome quién sería."

"Hasta que por fin lo vi. Para entonces él estaba viviendo en Toronto, así que comencé a visitarlo y pasaba los veranos ahí. Hoy me doy cuenta que no entendía lo que estaba pasando. Ahora que sé mucho sobre actuación, pienso en eso y me doy cuenta de las expectativas que pueden existir sobre un personaje. Por ejemplo, en el caso de Sam, sabes lo que le ha pasado, por lo que ha atravesado, y aún así te sientas con él a platicar y entiendes lo que es contar una historia. Así que me senté con mi padre, lo saludé y me quedé ahí viéndolo."

"Le pregunté que por qué nunca me había hablado y empecé a llorar y llorar y llorar. Lloré durante unas cinco horas, y aunque no era un niño que llorara mucho, no podía creer el dolor que tenía por esa experiencia. Y cuando pienso en eso ahora y a dónde llegué después de eso, me doy cuenta que había muchas cosas pasando dentro de mí emocionalmente y que no me daba cuenta. Ese fue un momento importante en mi vida, porque siempre me había preguntado cosas sobre mi padre y aquí estaba él frente a mí. Es chistoso porque cuando tenía unos 18 años, estaba caminando por la calle, junto a una casa, y un niño de unos cuatro años se me acercó, me miró y me dijo ‘¿Tú eres mi papá?’. Dios, eso me mató. Para entonces ya había conocido a mi padre, así que sabía lo que significaba conocerlo o no. Pensé mucho en eso haciendo esta película”.

Es difícil poner toda esa emoción en una “log-line”…

Growing up Butler

In his new film Machine Gun Preacher, Gerard Butler stars as real life Sam Childers, a former drug-dealing outlaw turned born-again Christian devoted to rescuing Sudanese child soldiers. Well, at least that’s the log-line, a Hollywood term for how to pitch a complex movie plot in one compact sentence.

For Butler, besides the challenge of having the real Childers on set the emotional journey of the story sometimes overwhelmed him, thinking about the horrific circumstances these kids had experienced – often being ripped from their homes and forced into battle, sometimes having to kill their own families.

Asking Childers about his own childhood and what led him into drugs, he says he came from a really normal family and that he can’t blame parental influences for his rebellious behavior. “Yeah I was going to say the same thing, that I came from a pretty normal family too,” says Butler. “But then I think well, I guess my mother divorced young and my father had his own issues, and I grew up without a father. Other than that I came from a normal family.” (Laughing.)

“Interestingly enough, my father turned up when I was 16 years old and I didn’t even know he was alive. I came home one day and walked into the house, my step-father was there – he was my mother’s boyfriend at the time – and he said, ‘Keep your jacket on, your dad’s here.’ So I went to this restaurant to meet him and I had to walk around tables going, is this him, is this my dad? Until finally I saw him."

"In actual fact by then he was living in Toronto so I started coming out to visit him and spend summers in Toronto. Looking back I didn’t understand what happened in that moment. But I look back on it now and I know a lot about acting, of how much can be pent up in a character and you would never know. For instance, in Same, you know what he’s gone through, the pain he’s suffered, and yet you sit now and you speak to him and you get storytelling. So I sat with my father and I said hello and I sat there looking at him. And I said why didn’t you ever get in touch and I started crying and crying and crying. I cried for like 5 hours and I wasn’t a kid that cried, but I couldn’t believe the pain that I was in from that experience."

"So when I look back now and think about where I went then, in that moment, emotionally, I realize there was a lot of stuff going on in me that I didn’t realize. That was a huge moment in my life, I had always wondered about my father and there he was in front of me. It’s funny because when I was about 18 I was walking down the street one day, walking past a house, and a little kid maybe 4 years old came out and looked at me and said, ‘Are you my daddy?’ Oh my God, it killed me. I had met my father by that point so I knew what it meant to know who your dad was, or to not know. And I thought about that so much during this movie.”

Hard to pull all that emotion in a “log-line” ………
