Ginnifer Goodwin le dice adiós a su Big Love

Ginnifer Goodwin es tan chiquita y tierna, que sorprende escucharla citar a C.S Lewis y decir que Shakespeare es su lectura de cabecera predilecta. Eso sí, ya nos ha sorprendido en interpretaciones llenas de matices: pensemos en la amiga adúltera, Rachel, en su más reciente cinta, Something Borrowed, o en su largo papel de Margene, la hermana-esposa en Big Love, la serie de HBO recién finalizada.

“Para mí, el que la serie termine es como una muerte terrible”, afirma. “Dependía mucho de ese lugar creativo y sano, y así fue día a día, durante muchos años. Soy muy cercana a mis compañeros de reparto y los extraño todos los días. Me costó mucho trabajo lidiar con el hecho de que nos sacaran del aire: no se me permite decir que el programa fue cancelado porque no fue así, fue su decisión [de los productores] ponerle un punto final. Pero cuando nos dijeron que esto sucedería, los productores nos dieron un par de horas libres para que lloráramos, y eso es lo que hicimos, fuimos al estacionamiento y hubieron lágrimas e hicimos llamadas telefónicas y después regresamos a trabajar. Luego, rumbo al final de la serie, nos llevaron a Bill, Jeanne, Chloe y a mí a una habitación, donde nos mostraron las últimas diez páginas del guión final. Fuimos los únicos a los que se les permitió leerlas hasta que los demás llegaron a trabajar el último día. Cuando leí esas páginas, entendí que siempre fuimos en esa dirección, y aprecio que hayan tenido la valentía de sacar al show del aire cuando nos estaba yendo tan bien: se mantuvieron fieles a su historia”.

¿Sigue en contacto con sus hermanas-esposas?

“Sobre todo con Jeanne y Chloe, con quienes hablo casi a diario. Son mis hermanas y siempre lo serán: a todos se nos hizo más fácil lidiar con el dolor así, sabiendo que podríamos continuar con nuestra amistad en el mundo exterior. Es difícil, porque nos tomó siete años hacer cinco temporadas y me pasé cada mañana, a las 5, tomando café con estas mujeres. Por esto, es extraño vivir ahora en un mundo en el que nos tenemos que poner al tanto de nuestras vidas, porque estábamos al tanto de todo cuando nos veíamos a diario. Las extraño muchísimo. De hecho, estaba filmando un episodio piloto en Vancouver cuando se transmitió el final de Big Love y Jeanne y Chloe me dejaban mensajes y lloraban, porque lo estaban viendo juntas. Pero HBO me había enviado el DVD para sentir que todos lo veíamos juntos en espíritu. De entre todos mis trabajos, probablemente siempre será mi favorito”.

Sospecho que habrá otros trabajos favoritos y actuaciones fantásticas para esta actriz talentosa y sorprendentemente joven. ¿Qué papel te gustaría que interpretara?

Ginnifer Goodwin is so damned little and cute that it’s somehow surprising to hear her quote C.S. Lewis and talk about Shakespeare as favorite bedtime reading. Of course she’s already surprised us in performances as nuanced as the unfaithful friend Rachel in her latest film, Something Borrowed or her long-running role as sister-wife Margene on Big Love, which has officially ended production.

“The show’s ending was like a terrible death for me.” she says, “I really depended on that creative and healthy place every day for many, many years. And I’m exceptionally close to my cast mates and miss them every day. I really had a lot of trouble with the fact that we were being taken off the air –I’m not allowed to say we were cancelled because we weren’t, it was their decision to end the show. But when they did tell us the show was ending, the producers gave us a couple of hours off of production to all go and cry, and we did, we all went to the parking lot and cried and made phone calls and finally went back to work. Then towards the end of the series, one day Bill and Jeanne and Chloe and I were taken to a room and shown the last ten pages of the final script, we were the only people allowed to read them until they got to work on the last day.  I understood when I read those pages that we were always going in this direction, and I appreciate that they were brave enough to take the show off the air when we were doing so well, because they were going to stay true to their story.”

Does she stay in touch with her sister wives?

“I mostly keep in touch with Jeanne and Chloe, whom I talk to on almost a daily basis. Those girls are my sisters and they always will be, and it eased the pain to all acknowledge that we could continue our friendship in the outside world. It’s hard because it took us 7 years to make 5 seasons and I spend every morning at 5 a.m. having coffee with those women. And so its strange now to be in a world where we have to call to catch each other up on what’s going on in our lives, because we were really into the minutiae of it all when we were together every day. I miss them terribly. I was actually shooting another pilot in Vancouver when the finale of Big Love aired and Jeanne and Chloe were leaving me messages and crying and watching it together, but HBO had overnighted me the DVD so I could feel like we were all watching it together in spirit. That was my favorite job I will probably ever have.”

I suspect there will be many other favorite jobs and terrific performances ahead for this talented and yes, surprising, young actress. What role would you like to see Ginnifer Goodwin play?
