This shouldn’t be about me, but damn I regret that I blew my one chance to interview Paul Newman! It was the premiere of CARS, in North Carolina – and I can’t even remember why I didn’t go, but the reason couldn’t have been good enough. Those impossibly blue eyes. So many unforgettable movies. The fact that he was such a supporter of liberal causes he made it onto Nixon’s enemy list. The nonchalant philanthropy, particularly the hundreds of millions of charitable dollars generated from his popular food products. That unapologetic passion for race car driving. The classy, tabloid-free 50 year marriage to Joanne Woodward.  He was truly one of the great old-school Hollywood icons.

“There couldn’t be a greater role model for anyone in the industry, period,” Leonardo DiCaprio tells me. “We often talk about people holding onto their same morals as when they started out in this industry, how they become jaded – well, Paul Newman seemed like the guy who always had his priorities in check. I didn’t know the man but he was the pinnacle of what you would want to be in this industry. Somebody that churned up unforgettable performances in great movies but simultaneously kept his private life private, valued his family but at the same time cared about the world around him and remained a normal human being until his last days.”
