Joe Strummer, el legendario vocalista de The Clash, le encantaba escuchar música en la radio. Incluso mientras recorría el mundo con «la única banda que importa», Joe Strummer todavía tenía el sueño de algún día tener un programa de radio en el que pondría discos para la BBC World Service, donde escuchó los últimos éxitos del Reino Unido en su radio de onda corta cuando era tan sólo un adolescente en África.

Finalmente fue en 1998 cuando Joe Strummer cumpliría su sueño con su programa de radio “London Calling”. Desde esa fecha y hasta 2001, Strummer presentó una serie de programas con un formato simple: un hombre y su colección de discos. Un archivo sonoro que abarca música de todo el mundo y que incluye a muchos de los artistas de rock, reggae y folk que inspiraron a The Clash (además de muchas sorpresas.)

Estas transmisiones de radio inspiraron a muchos oyentes de todo el mundo, incluido al director de cine Julien Temple, quien destaca estos programas en su documental, “Joe Strummer: The Future is Unwritten.”

«Joe era el mejor comunicador», dice Temple. «Hizo que su público sintiera que lo conocían a un nivel personal único: íntimo, irreverente e inspirador al mismo tiempo».

Los 14 episodios originales de media hora se editaron para reducirlos a 8 programas de una hora. En este compilado también se han agregado entrevistas con Joe Strummer, sus antiguos compañeros de The Clash, Tom Morello (Rage Against the Machine / Audioslave / Prophets of Rage) y el cineasta Julien Temple, entre otros. Además Jon Langford es quien introduce cada uno de los episodios y es también quién presenta a Joe antes de cada uno de sus programas.
