La controversia de Amanda Knox: Murder on Trial in Italy
Se busca impedir la transmisión del filme para la televisión, con Hayden Panettiere.
El primero de noviembre de 2007, una mujer joven fue brutalmente asesinada a puñaladas en Perugia, Italia: los ecos del crimen aún se escuchan en el mundo entero, especialmente en Hollywood. Las coartadas son inconsistentes, es posible que haya existido un triángulo amoroso, se encarceló a un estudiante norteamericano por el crimen, hay alegaciones que acusan a la policía italiana de ineptitud. Con tantos detalles que alcanzan la controversia, era cuestión de tiempo para que alguien hiciera una cinta sobre el caso.
El terrible asalto sexual y asesinato de Meredith Kercher, nacida en el Reino Unido, ha sido contado y recontado en los medios, mientras que su roommate estadounidense y el exnovio de ésta fueron condenados por el crimen en 2009 y sentenciados a 26 y 25 años de prisión respectivamente. Ambos niegan su culpabilidad, y mientras su reclamo pasa por las cortes, un forense radicado en Texas, Ron Hendry, le echa más leña al fuego de la controversia. Esto es lo que le dijo a la prensa: “Amanda Knox y Raffaele Sollecito nunca hubieran sido considerados como personas de interés, y mucho menos culpables, si la policía hubiese hecho bien su trabajo desde un inicio”.
Pero en este caso que de por sí ya ha recibido mucha atención e inspirado encabezados en los tabloides, las últimas noticias han creado una nueva ola de atención mediática. Producido por Lifetime Television y protagonizado por Hayden Panetierre, Amanda Knox: Murder on Trial in Italy está programado para transmitirse el lunes 21 de febrero, con diversos horarios de transmisión en el mundo entero. El padre de la víctima, Jon Kercher, criticó las escenas que retratan el crimen como “totalmente horroríficas”. El abogado de Sollecito dice que el filme presenta escenas que “escapan toda lógica”. Los abogados de Knox quieren evitar la transmisión del filme de Lifetime: han enviado cartas a la cadena advirtiéndoles que están preparados para ir a las cortes de Estados Unidos para secuestrar al largometraje si es que no se cancela la transmisión. Mientras tanto, Knox, de 23 años, le dijo a su padrastro que el trailer de la película casi la hace vomitar. “Estaba en un estado de shock”, afirmó el padrastro, Chris Mellas, a ABC News. “Me dijo que literalmente sintió que se le iba el aire. Sintió que iba a vomitar”. Los abogados también solicitaron que el avance se retirara de la página web del canal, y reportaron que así había sucedido. The gruesome sexual assault and murder of British-born Meredith Kercher has been told and retold in the media, as her American roommate Amanda Knox and Knox’s exboyfriend were convicted of the crime in 2009 and sentenced to 26 and 25 years, respectively. Both deny the charges and while their appeals trial is under way, a Texas-based forensic expert Ron Hendry has added fuel to the controversy, telling the press, "Amanda Knox and Raffaele Sollecito would never have been regarded as persons of interest –much less suspects– had the police correctly done their job from the start.”
But for a case already rife with tabloid headlines, the latest news has created a new wave of media attention. Produced by Lifetime Television and starring Hayden Panettiere, Amanda Knox: Murder on Trial in Italy is scheduled to air Monday, Feb. 21, with various air dates worldwide. The victim’s father, Jon Kercher, has criticized the re-enactment scenes from the TV movie as "absolutely horrific." Co-defendant Sollecito’s attorney said the film presented scenes that were "beyond any logic." And Knox’s lawyers are attempting to prevent the Lifetime film from coming out, sending letters to Lifetime warning the network they were prepared to go to U.S. court to try to sequester the film if it isn’t canceled. Meanwhile the 23-year-old told her stepfather that the movie’s trailer made her want to vomit. "She was so amazingly shocked," Knox’s stepfather, Chris Mellas, told ABC News. "She said she literally started hyperventilating. She felt like she was going to throw up." The lawyers also demanded that the trailer removed from the cable channel’s website, and reported that indeed it has since been removed – but as of this writing it hasn’t been removed at all.
