La película que más buzz recibe en un festival siempre es impredecible. Y este año, lo que sucedió en el Festival Internacional de Toronto es particularmente curioso. Claro, algunos títulos ya se están mencionando para los Oscares (Rabbit Hole, The Debt, Barney’s Version). Pero, ¿de qué están todos realmente hablando? Del anuncio de Casey Affleck de que su supuesto documental sobre la caída de Joaquín Phoenix es, en realidad, una farsa. Pero aquí lo interesante: muchos de nosotros creemos que el anuncio en sí fue falso. Bueno, más o menos. Todos tienen una opinión diferente. ¿Comenzó como un engaño que se salió de control? ¿Fue una conspiración de Casey con su esposa (la hermana de Joaquin) para filmar la cinta como una distracción al problema real de su amigo? ¿Este “anuncio” será en realidad un intento de controlar el daño, o una movida desesperada para intentar recuperarse de las horribles críticas? Sólo el tiempo lo dirá. La única cosa en la que todos parecen estar de acuerdo, es que si esto fue planeado como arte, fue una muy mala idea.

Cintas que vale la pena mencionar en una luz más positiva: el segundo trabajo de Ben Affleck tras la cámara, The Town, es genial, y él está genial en ella. Ryan Reynolds comprueba que es más que una cara bonita en la muy claustrofóbica Buried. El drama psicológico Stone es protagonizada por Edward Norton, Robert DeNiro y Milla Jovovich, todos en papeles entrañables, diferentes a todo lo que hemos visto de ellos. Y Alejandro González Iñárritu y Javier Bardem le echan una mirada conmovedora a la inmigración en Biutiful.

¿Y qué sería de un festival sin un poco de frivolidad? Siempre la mejor fiesta del festival es la mía, el evento 11 Hollywood Foreign Press Association / InStyle Magazine en el histórico Windsor Arms Hotel. ¿Qué lo hace tan especial? Pues de entrada, es la invitación más difícil de conseguir y es imposible colarte, con ese ejército de guardias de seguridad en ambos lados de la alfombra roja. Así que prácticamente todas las estrellas llegan en algún punto de la noche, incluso los que rara vez salen, como Edward Norton. Pero este año no era una actriz de primer nivel a la que todos se intentaban acercar, sino sorpresivamente Sarah Silverman, quien desde que se bajó de su limosina comenzó a recibir gritos de fans formados. ¡Supongo que todos necesitan un poco de comedia hoy en día!

Its always unpredictable what becomes the buzz of any film festival. And this year’s TIFF (Toronto International Film Festival) is particularly curious. Oh sure, a few film titles are getting Oscar chatter – Rabbit Hole, The Debt, Barney’s Version. But what’s everyone really talking about? Casey Affleck’s announcement that his so-called documentary I’m Still Here about Joaquin Phoenix’s downward spiral was all faked. But here’s what’s interesting – many of us think the announcement itself is a fake – well, sort of. And everyone’s got a different opinion. Did it start out as a hoax and then spin out of control? Did pal Casey conspire with his wife (Joaquin’s sister) to shoot the film as a cover for his friend’s real digression? Is the “admission’ now just damage control – or a desperate move to try and recover from the horrible reviews? Only time will tell. One thing everyone seems to agree on, if this was contrived as art, it was a really really bad idea.

Films worth talking about in a more positive light: Ben Affleck’s second directorial effort, The Town is terrific – and he’s terrific in it. Ryan Reynolds proves he’s more than a pretty face in the very claustrophobic Buried. Psychological drama Stone stars Edward Norton, Robert DeNiro and Milla Jovovich all compelling in different roles than we’ve seen them in before. And Alejandro Gonzales Inárritu and Javier Bardem take a poignant look at immigration issues in Biutiful.

And what’s a festival without some frivolity? Always best party of the festival is my own, the 11th Hollywood Foreign Press Association/ InStyle Magazine big-buzz bash at the historic Windsor Arms Hotel. What makes it so special? Well for one thing it’s the hardest invitation to get and its impossible to crash, with an army of security guards doing their job at both ends of the red carpet. So every star still in town eventually shows up, into the wee hours of the morning – even the ones who rarely come out to party, like Edward Norton. But this year it wasn’t some A-list actress that everyone was trying to get close to – surprisingly it was Sarah Silverman, from the minute she stepped out of a limo, fans lined up screaming her name. I guess everyone needs some comic relief these days!
