Breaking news: Cine PREMIERE journalist becomes a gifting lounge junkie!!!

During my years attending awards shows and various film festivals, a strange phenomenon has sprung up called the “celebrity gifting lounge.” This concept didn’t exist ten years ago, and from the outside looking in, I have often written about the foolishness of giving the rich and famous so much free stuff. Oh it’s easy to understand why the vendors give it away – its great marketing to have a celebrity wear your dress or tie or necklace, or take a vacation at your resort. But why do movie stars feel the need to be so greedy?

??But that was then. Yesterday I was invited to my first Golden Globes gifting lounge – Nathalie Dubois’ famously luxurious annual event held this year at the Peninsula Hotel in Beverly Hills. Lets talk about greedy – I was a kid at a candy store. Who knew free stuff could be so much fun? This is how it works: You check in, a guide takes you from display to display, and vendors or designers just give you things. OK I didn’t get the MOST fabulous items, they save the best –like the trip to Tahiti– for the celebrities obviously. I ran into my old pal Billy Zane, who has a new TV show coming out called The Deep End, and Gilles Marini (from the Sex and The City movie), and Eva La Rue (CSI Miami). But after an hour and a half, including an indulgent 12 minute shoulder massage and a manicure, I had so many bags of gifts that I could hardly carry it all to my car. Was it embarrassing? Hell no! So it makes me wonder, was F. Scott Fitzgerald right – the rich are just like us only they just have more money? Because I can now understand the seduction of being given beautiful things you might not otherwise have ever seen – whether you end up keeping it all or giving it away. Well I have to go now, I have an appointment at another gifting lounge today!??

But wait a minute – in case you think it’s ALL about greed, lounge owner Nathalie had donations boxes at every stall, and just in the time I was there collected thousands of dollars to send to Haiti!

Gifting Lounges Day 2: Back to the Peninsula Hotel for Heather Stewart’s “Oh Canada Premium Gift Lounge” where we table hopped with Neve Campbell and Catherine O’Hara, walking away with designer art, handmade chocolate, amazing one of a kind jewelry from Vintage Bling, a certificate for a wilderness yacht cruise, a very heavy gold bear casting and even a psychic reading. I didn’t score the really comfy furry snow moccasins, but Neve did. Next stop, Globes weekend.
