Y ahora para el entretenimiento más irresistible del festival: la ceremonia de inauguración del presidente Barack Obama. La emoción estaba presente en el frío aíre mientras grupos tempraneros se congregaron frente a las pantallas de plasma y los altavoces dispuestos en la parte baja de la calle Main, y los realizadores con proyecciones programadas en los horarios de la mañana lamentaron la probabilidad de contar con poca audiencia. Mi opción fue un brunch en Zoom, patrocinado por el “Sindicato Internacional de Proveedores de Servicios” y mis amigos de Overture Films. Es difícil articular lo mágico que se sintió estar sentada en un cuarto abarrotado con influyentes jugadores de la industria, con lágrimas en los ojos, pegados a las pantallas de televisión y compartiendo tal energía colectiva de victoria y esperanza para el futuro. Una experiencia verdaderamente memorable.

Y fue un acto difícil de seguir. No fue fácil subirse a un camión e ir de regreso al trabajo como siempre, especialmente ¡después de tomar mimosas de celebración toda la mañana! PUSH de Lee Daniels (basado en la novela por SAPPHIRE) definitivamente reprimió las emociones, pero no a falta de brillantes actuaciones. Una historia perturbadora acerca de una niña iletrada y con sobrepeso embarazada por su padre, y sin embargo la película está llena de valor y esperanza. Sin embargo me regresó a la vibra positiva del Zoom, donde me topé a Liam Neeson, quien se veía crudo después de la premiere de su película FIVE MINUTES OF HEAVEN (Competencia Dramática de Cine Mundial) y después de haber perdido su pasaporte de alguna forma. Después vino la fiesta de la previa a la premiere para la película MANURE de los hermanos Polish, pero ni los hermanos ni la estrella Billy Bob Thornton no se molestaron en aparecerse. Por suerte la noche terminó con una nota mejor, en el histórico Teatro Egipcio, con la extraordinaria e íntima exploración de la revolución Zapatista en Chiapas, CORAZÓN DEL TIEMPO (también de la Competencia de Cine mundial) del director mexicano Alberto Cortez.

Una buena película, un nuevo presidente y un gran día.

And now for the most compelling entertainment of the festival: the inauguration of President Barack Obama. Excitement was in the chilly air as early morning crowds gathered around the outdoor plasma screens and loud speakers dotted along lower Main Street, and filmmakers with screenings scheduled in morning slots lamented the probability of low turnouts. My choice was an invitation-only viewing brunch at Zoom, sponsored by the “Service Employees International Union” and my friends at Overture Films. It’s hard to articulate how magical it felt, sitting in a crowded room of industry power brokers, all teary-eyed, glued to the TV screens and sharing such a collective energy of victory and hope for the future. A truly memorable experience.

And quite a hard act to follow. It wasn’t easy to get on a shuttle and get back to work as usual, especially after sipping celebratory Mimosas all morning! Lee Daniels’ PUSH (based on the novel by SAPPHIRE) definitely put a damper on the mood, but not for lack of brilliant performances. A disturbing story about an illiterate overweight high school girl pregnant with her father’s child – and yet the film is full of courage and hope. Still it sent me back to the positive vibe of Zoom, where I ran into Liam Neeson, looking very hung over from the premiere of his film FIVE MINUTES OF HEAVEN (World Cinema Dramatic Competition) and having somehow lost his passport. Next was the pre-premiere party for the Polish Brothers’ MANURE, but neither the brothers not star Billy Bob Thornton bothered to show up. Luckily the night ended on a better note, up at the historic Egyptian Theater, with the extraordinary and intimate exploration of the Zapatista revolution in Chiapas, HEART OF TIME (CORAZON del TIEMPO, also World Cinema Competition) from Mexican director Alberto Cortez.

A good movie, a new president – what a great day.
