Donde yo crecí, no teníamos cine –recuerda la estrella de Avatar, Sam Worthington–. Había un tipo que solía llegar con una maleta llena de VHS piratas y mi papá le compraba uno o dos. Eso era todo lo que teníamos. No imprimas esto –ríe–, ¿qué tal si arrestan a mi papá? Como verás, mis influencias cinematográficas eran muy limitadas".
¿Y qué cosas ponían a girar la imaginación del joven Sam entonces? "Tengo muy mala memoria, apenas y puedo recordar lo que hice ayer –dice riendo–. Pero lo que sí recuerdo, y esto es algo en que lo realmente creo, es que cuando tienes siete u ocho años, eres libre de jugar a lo que quieras. El mundo es tuyo y nadie te puede decir lo contrario. Cuando tienes como 14 o 15, la gente comienza a decirte otras cosas, que no puedes hacer ciertas cosas, que tus calificaciones no son lo suficientemente buenas, que la vida que podrás llevar no será la que quieres. Y para cuando cumples 20, ya te crees todo eso. Pero yo un día me di cuenta de que no quiero estar aquí sentado a los 60 años pensando en lo libre que era a los siete, así que tomé una decisión conciente de que quería regresar a pensar así. El tipo de pensamiento en el que nadie me podría decir que sería imposible que algún día estaría sentado junto a James Cameron. Todos tenemos que creer en las posibilidades".

“We didn’t have a movie cinema where I grew up,” recalls AVATAR star Sam Worthington. “We had a guy that used to come around with a suitcase filled with a few pirated VHS films and my dad would buy one or two of those, and that was all we had. Don’t print this (laughing) – my dad might get arrested! So my influences from the movies were quite limited.”
So what things did spark young Sam’s imagination growing up? “My brain’s honeycombed, I can barely remember yesterday,” he laughs. “But what I can remember is – and this is a big thing I believe in – that when you’re 7 or 8 you’re free to play whatever you want. The world is your oyster and no one can tell you otherwise. When you’re like 14, 15 people start telling you otherwise, that you can’t do things, that your grades aren’t good enough, that the life you’ll be able to lead isn’t the life you want. And by the time you’re like 20 you start believing them. But I suddenly realized that I didn’t want to be sitting there at 60 looking back to how freeing it was to be 7 so I made a conscious decision that I wanted to go back to that kind of thinking. The kind of thinking where I can’t be told it’s impossible I’d ever be sitting in a room with James Cameron. We all need to believe in the possibilities.”
